General Information On Abreva Cream

Abreva Cream is used to treat cold sores. The generic name of this drug is Docosanol, and it works by stalling the growth of the herpes virus. In addition to Docosanol—the active ingredient used in the formulation—this drug also contains benzyl alcohol as a non-active ingredient. This is a non-prescription topical cream, so you do not need a doctor’s prescription to buy Abreva Cream.

Side Effects for Abreva Cream

Precautions

Abreva Dosage

Use Abreva Cream five times a day, unless otherwise specified by your doctor. For better management of cold sore symptoms, it is recommended that you apply the cream at the first sign of outbreak of a cold sore. You must wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying this topical cream. You should store it at room temperature, away from light and dust. If your cold sore does not heal even after using Abreva Cream for 10 days, you should stop the medication and consult your doctor.

Interactions

It is unknown if Abreva Cream interacts with other drugs. That is why you should inform your pharmacist or doctor about all the medicines that you are currently taking before you start the treatment.
