General Information On Aclovate Ointment
Aclovate Ointment is used for relieving itchy rashes such as psoriasis and for treating skin problems accompanied by redness, swelling, and itching. Its generic name is Alclometasone Dipropionate, and it belongs to the category of synthetic topical steroid medicines. This drug is available in the form of a topical ointment, which needs to be applied directly on the affected area. It works by reducing the inflammatory reaction in the area and modifying your immune system.
Side Effects for Aclovate Ointment
Few patients may experience local adverse reactions after using Aclovate Ointment. Such reactions may include burning, dryness, erythema, irritation, or papular rashes in the treated area. Sometimes, it may also lead to hypopigmentation, acne eruptions, folliculitis, perioral dermatitis, striae, miliaria, secondary infections, or allergic contact dermatitis in some patients.
Although it is a topical application, Aclovate Ointment can get absorbed into your skin and adversely react with your internal system. Sometimes, it may lead to muscle weakness, weight gain, mood changes, blurred vision, tiredness, insomnia, make you see halos around lights, or lead to puffiness on the face. In such cases, you should stop using the ointment and inform your doctor about your symptoms. You should also not continue using Aclovate Ointment if you develop an allergic reaction to it. Symptoms of an allergic reaction are difficulty in breathing, swollen face, tongue, throat or lips, hives and rashes.
Precautions
Your doctor will not ask you to buy Aclovate Ointment if you are already suffering from a skin condition such as chickenpox, shingles, or measles. After applying the ointment, do not cover it with an occlusive dressing or bandage, as it may increase the medicine’s absorption. This may result in an increased risk of side effects. Pregnant women should not use Aclovate Ointment, as it may cause harm to the unborn baby. Breastfeeding mothers should also avoid using it, as its safety for such women and their children has not yet been established. You will usually be advised to use the ointment for 2 weeks. If your condition does not improve even after 2 weeks, a reassessment of your condition may be required.
Aclovate Ointment Dosage
Aclovate Ointment 0.05% is available in 15gm tubes. You will have to apply it on the affected area 2-3 times a day, usually for 2 weeks. You should apply the ointment exactly as suggested by your doctor. Applying it more often or for a longer period of time will not help in relieving the condition quickly. It will only increase the risks of developing side effects.
Interactions
Do not buy Aclovate Ointment if you are on Prednisone or other such drugs, as they may adversely react with each other. Apart from this, you should inform your doctor about all the prescription and non-prescription drugs you are taking at present. These include herbal preparations, health supplements, injections, and other topical applications. Also inform your doctor if you have tested positive for TB or if you have recently received a vaccination. Based on such information, your doctor will be able to decide whether this ointment is the right product for you or not, and what dosage should be given to you and for how long.
