General Information On Activase
Activase is used for treating blood clots in the lungs so that the blood can flow freely through the body. In this way, heart function is improved after a heart attack. The generic name of this drug is Alteplase. Alteplase is a tissue plasminogen activator, which helps in breaking down unwanted blood clots. Your doctor may also recommend you to buy Activase in order to improve chances of recovery after a stroke. Activase is available in the form of an IV and has to be administered for 30 minutes.
Side Effects for Activase
Some serious side effects associated with Activase include bloody or black stools, change in the color of the toes or fingers, blood in the vomit, change in vision, coughing up blood, chills, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, fast, irregular, or slow heartbeat, hoarseness of the voice, numbness in the legs or arms, weakness on one side of the body, rectal bleeding, purple patches on the skin, seizures, severe muscle pain, sharp chest pain, severe stomach pain, speech changes or problems, fainting, easy bruising or bleeding, severe headache and swelling, and redness or pain at the injection site. An allergic reaction to Activase may be identified by tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, hives, rashes or swelling in the mouth, lips, tongue, or face. In that case, you should inform your doctor immediately so that he/she can take steps to relieve your symptoms.
Precautions
You should not take Activase if you have active internal bleeding, have recently undergone a spinal or brain surgery, have a history of stroke, growth in the brain, bulging blood vessels, or abnormal formation of blood vessels. You should also tell your doctor if you have uncontrolled blood pressure, stroke, a low platelet count, or seizures. Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Activase if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning to get pregnant, or have recently given birth to a child. This drug is not to be used by elderly people over 75 years old, as they are more susceptible to the side effects of Activase. Limit your alcoholic consumption and do not do any such activity that requires you to be completely alert, like driving or operating a machine. As Activase reduces your platelet count, you should avoid situations where you can get injured or bruised easily.
Activase Dosage
The dosage given largely depends on the patient’s weight. Mostly, a patient less than 67kgs is given Activase 15mg IV bolus, followed by Activase 50mg infusion continued for 30 minutes, and then Activase 35mg given for 60 minutes. Patients over 67kgs are given Activase 15mg IV bolus, followed by Activase 0.75mg /kg up to a maximum of Activase 50mg, and then Activase 0.50mg/kg up to a maximum of Activase 35mg for 60 minutes.
Interactions
Some of the drugs that may interact adversely with Activase include anticoagulants, aspirin, abciximab, and dipyridamole, as they may increase your risk of bleeding easily. ACE inhibitors like lisinopril increase risks of severe swelling and trouble breathing. Nitrates like nitroglycerine and isosorbide dinitrate decrease the effectiveness of Activase. Therefore, you should inform your doctor if you are taking any of the above mentioned medicinal products.
