General Information On Adenoscan
Adenoscan is available in the form of an injection, which the doctor administers to a patient in order to understand the functioning of his or her heart. The generic name of Adenoscan is Adenosine. Adenosine powder is soluble in water and has a pH of 4.5-7.5. This potent peripheral vasodilator is given intravenously to the patient, which helps in relaxing the vascular smooth muscles. It works by opening up the blood vessels in the heart, so that the blood can flow more freely and doctors are able to see them clearly through radionuclide. Although it is safe for people of almost all ages, Adenoscan should be given to patients less than 18 years of age only if extremely necessary.
Side Effects for Adenoscan
Some of the common side effects associated with Adenoscan include back discomfort, weakness, drowsiness, cough, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, metallic taste in the mouth, ear discomfort, nasal congestion, and tongue discomfort. Some patients may also complain about redness, itching, pain, or swelling at the injection site. You need to contact your doctor if you notice any serious side effects of the drug. These may include tremors, emotional instability, vaginal pressure, tonic-clonic seizures, loss of consciousness, throat tightness, and respiratory arrest. Sometimes, Adenoscan may also lead to non-fatal myocardial infarction, fatal ventricular arrhythmia, 3rd Degree AV block, palpitations, bradycardia, sinus exit block, T-wave changes, sweating, sinus pause, and hypertension. Allergic reactions to the drug may be identified as hives, trouble breathing, skin rash, and swelling on the face, throat, tongue, or lips.
Precautions
Since there are no conclusive findings on the effects of Adenoscan on fetuses or newborns, the drug is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Adenoscan if you are suffering from asthma, high blood pressure, or if you have undergone heart transplantation. Also, inform your doctor if you have a history of lung disease, heart problems, or epilepsy. As the drug causes dizziness and blurred vision, you should not do activities that require complete alertness and clear vision, like driving a vehicle or operating a machine. Limit your intake of alcoholic beverages, as they may worsen your condition.
Adenoscan Dosage
Usually, an adult patient is given Adenoscan 140mcg/kg/min for 6 minutes, with the dosage amounting to Adenoscan 0.84mg/kg. The dose given to the patient also depends on his/her weight. After administering Adenoscan for 3 minutes, Thallium 201 is infused at the point of infusion, which helps in imaging so that the doctor can see inside your heart.
Interactions
Adenoscan is not used along with adenosine receptor antagonists as they may inhibit the vasoactive effects of the medicine. These antagonists may include methylxanthines like theophylline or caffeine and nucleoside transport inhibitors like dipyridamole. As Adenoscan causes dizziness, it should not be taken with other products that have the same effect, like sedatives, narcotic pain relievers, antidepressants, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety drugs, and seizure medications. Apart from that, you should also inform your doctor about all the prescription and non-prescription drugs you are taking at present, including herbal products, mineral and vitamin supplements, and topical applications.
