General Information On Adequan
Adequan is used for controlling symptoms of traumatic and degenerative arthritis in dogs and horses. Adequan Canine is meant for dogs and Adequan Equine is meant for horses. Its generic name is Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan Solution, and it belongs to the category of drugs known as potent proteolytic enzyme inhibitors. Adequan is an injectable drug that works by reducing protein levels and increasing hyaluronic acid concentration in the synovial fluid, especially in traumatized hock and equine carpal joints, so that joint function is improved. Sometimes, a veterinarian can also prescribe this drug after a surgery in order to prevent inflammation in the joints of the animal.
Side Effects for Adequan
Nose bleeds and bloody, tarry, or dark stools are some of the side effects of Adequan that indicate the decreased ability of the blood to clot. This condition can lead to easy bruising or bleeding in the animal. In such a case, you should immediately contact the veterinarian. You should also stop giving Adequan to the animal if it develops an allergic reaction after receiving the first dose. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include hives, swelling on the face, scratching, vomiting, sudden diarrhea, seizures, shock, cold limbs, coma, or pale gums. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact the veterinarian immediately.
Precautions
Before giving Adequan injection to your pet, tell the veterinarian if your horse or dog has a suspected or diagnosed bleeding disorder. Also tell him/her if it has a liver or kidney disease or a coagulation disorder. Pregnant, lactating, and breeding animals should also not be given this drug, as it may be harmful for their babies or for themselves. Also inform the veterinarian about all the medical conditions your pet is suffering from, so that he/she can conduct the necessary tests and make the required dosage adjustments. Do not allow your pet to get involved in a strenuous activity for at least 48 hours of receiving the injection. Consult the veterinarian immediately if you notice severe swelling, inflammation, or signs of a new infection in the treated area.
Adequan Dosage
Adequan 500mg will be given to your animal once in 4 days for a period of 28 days. The injection is given intramuscularly, and the drug starts working in the affected joint within 2 hours. Adequan remains in the affected area for around 3 days. However, signs of improvement will be noticed only after around 4 weeks. Make sure to cleanse the injection site thoroughly so that chances of a new infection are minimized. Also do not mix the medicine with any other drug or solvent. As far as the storage of Adequan is concerned, you should keep it at room temperature and away from pets and children.
Interactions
Before you buy Adequan for your pet, inform the veterinarian about all the prescription and over-the-counter medicines you are giving to your dog or horse. These include not only oral medicines, injections, and topical applications, but also herbal products and diet supplements.
