General Information On Advicor

The Advicor drug is an important medication for those suffering from high cholesterol. It is used for individuals who have unsuccessfully tried to lower these levels without medication. This drug is time-released and is taken once a day. It is a combination of Niacin /Lovastatin. Niacin works by increasing HLD or good cholesterol levels by preventing the liver from taking this good cholesterol out of the bloodstream. Niacin also prevents the liver from producing the bad cholesterol and reduces the fatty acids in the blood. Lovastatin blocks HMG-CoA reductase, a natural enzyme, from producing cholesterol. Lovastatin also helps the liver get rid of the bad LDL cholesterol. While this drug will work alone, expect better results when used in conjunction with proper diet and exercise. Side Effects/Precautions for Advicor

Advicor should not be used if you have gastric ulcers or liver problems. Do not use this drug if you are allergic to the ingredients or have bleeding problems. Women who are pregnant, nursing or wish to become pregnant should not us this drug. Do not change this drug for an immediate release without checking with your physician. You should have your liver enzyme levels checked regularly while on generic Advicor. It is not advisable to drink a lot of alcohol while taking this drug.

Side effects can include muscle pain or weakness and should be reported to your doctor immediately, as this is a serious side effect. Niacin/lovastatin can increase sugar levels in your blood so diabetics should monitor their levels closely. Also inform your doctor if you have gout or kidney illness. If you are taking colestipol or cholestyramine you need to be sure they are taken at least 4-6 hours apart. You might experience flushed skin, which should decrease with time. Other side effects of generic Advicor include headaches, rash, nausea, flu like symptoms, diarrhea, nausea, itchiness and pain.
