General Information On Alimta
Alimta is a cancer medication that is indicated for use in the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma (a cancer affecting the inner lining of the chest cavity) and initial treatment of nonsquamous non-small cell lung cancer in combination with other chemotherapy. In cases of nonsquamous non-small cell lung cancer, the drug is used maintenance therapy for patients whose disease has not progressed after first line therapy and as a single agent after prior chemotherapy. Alimta belongs to the family of medicines known as antifolate antineoplastic agents. This drug stops the growth of cancerous cells by disrupting the metabolic processes essential or cell replication.
Side Effects / Precautions For Alimta
The active ingredient of this drug is pemetrexed disodium. Before your healthcare provider starts you on Alimta, tell him if you have renal or hepatic disorders, bone marrow suppression, weak immune system or an accumulation of fluid around the lung, liver or other internal organs. Do not use this drug if you are allergic to pemetrexed. Throughout the therapy, you should take vitamin B12 and folic acid to guard your stomach, blood cells and bone marrow from the adverse reaction of the drug. The drug might react adversely with your current medications. Make sure your doctor knows about all your current prescription and non-prescription medications. Do not use this drug when you are pregnant as it can harm the unborn baby. Use effective contraception to avoid pregnancy when on this treatment.
The most commonly observed side effects with single agent use of the drug include fatigue, nausea and anorexia. Some other potential side effects when used in combination with other chemotherapy medicines include vomiting, low white blood cells, low platelet count, anemia, mucosal damage to mouth and pharynx and constipation.
