General Information On Altabax

Altabax ointment is used to treat skin infections caused by bacteria. It is commonly used to treat an infection called Impetigo caused due to Staphylococcus aureus. The Altabax drug disrupts protein formation in the bacterial cells which are vital for the survival and spread of the infection. The ointment is classified as a protein syntheses inhibitor. Altabax is indicated for use in adults and children as well. It can be used in infants older than 9 months.

Side Effects/Precautions For Altabax

Skin site irritation is the most common side effect of Altabax or Retapamulin. If you scratch it can worsen the infection. Headache and diarrhea can also result but these are not common. However, when they persist, medical attention becomes necessary. In children, the symptoms of Retapamulin are more pronounced. It can cause gastro intestinal problems like nausea and diarrhea. Eczema at the site of infection is an adverse reaction and it makes children scratch the skin's surface. Inflammation of the nose and throat have been associated with brand or generic Altabax; fever is sometimes a side effect.

Some infections may resist treatment and can continue spreading. If there is no improvement, the ointment has to be stopped and a doctor should be consulted. There are no studies to prove that brand or generic Altabax is safe for pregnant or breast feeding women. So it may not be prescribed unless the infection is severe and the risk of spread is high. Individuals undergoing treatment for other skin conditions like acne and psoriasis should discuss the interaction of medications before opting for treatment.

Altabax Dosage

Altabax is an ointment available in 5 gm, 10 gm and 15 gm tubes and is meant for treating and preventing infections caused due to susceptible bacteria. This ointment should be applied up to 100cm2 in the total area amongst adults and up to 2% of the total body surface area amongst children aged 9 months and above. The prescribed dosage of Altabax for adults is two times every day for five days and in children above 9 months, the prescribed dosage is twice every day for five days. After the ointment is applied, a gauze dressing or a sterile bandage can be used to cover the affected area if required.
