General Information On Asacol
Asacol is an anti-inflammatory drug used in the treatment of diseases that cause inflammation of the bowels. It is used to treat ulcerative colitis, moderate Crohn’s disease, and proctitis. It is an oral drug that contains the chemical Mesalamine or 5-aminosalicylic acid (5ASA). In addition to the treatment of ulcerative colitis, it is also used for the prevention of recurrence of the symptoms of ulcerative colitis. In addition to the above-mentioned diseases, your doctor may prescribe Asacol for other purposes.
Side Effects for Asacol
Mesalamine has a few side effects and in most cases, these are reversible and mild. However, a large number of patients do not suffer from any side effects at all. The common adverse effects of the drug are diarrhea, cramps, nausea, bloating, and flatulence. In rare cases, the effect may be serious and may result in bloody diarrhea, renal problems, liver problems, severe cramps and pain in the abdomen and high fever. In such cases, you must immediately contact your doctor. Other uncommon side effects of Asacol include headache, hair loss, worsening of colitis and allergic reaction to the drug. This list of adverse effects is not complete, and therefore, it is important that you contact your doctor for any clarification.
Precautions
You should not take Asacol if you have a proven allergy to salicylates such as Aspirin or Mesalamine. It is critical to inform your doctor of your medical history. This is important because in some cases, the drug can cause serious problems such as liver and kidney problems. In case of worsening of symptoms or any acute reaction after taking the drug, you must discontinue the drug immediately and get in touch with your doctor. The usage of Mesalamine in pregnant women and nursing mothers is not proven and therefore, it should be used only if the use is justified. There is lack of adequate information of its safety with regards to children, and therefore, it should not be used in pediatric cases.
Asacol Dosage
You can buy Asacol in the form of Asacol 400mg tablets or Asacol 800mg tablets. In cases of ulcerative colitis (mild to moderate), the dosage in adults is usually two tablets of Asacol 400mg taken three times a day. The total dosage in a day is 2.4 grams, and the duration for this dosage is normally 6 weeks. In cases where the drug is prescribed for maintaining the remission of ulcerative colitis, the dosage is up to 1.6 grams per day, given in divided doses. The duration of medication may vary and may last up to six months.
Interactions
Before you buy Asacol and start taking the drug, you must inform your doctor of any other drugs that you are currently using. This includes both prescription as well as over-the-counter drugs. You must inform your doctor of any NSAID or painkillers, antiviral drugs, cancer drugs, antibiotics or any other drug. It is important to mention here that this list is not complete. In addition, you should never start a new drug without informing your doctor while you are taking Asacol.
