General Information on Avalide
Avalide is a prescription drug that contains hydrochlorothiazide, which helps in reducing blood volume, and irebesartan, which helps the blood vessels to relax. The drug is prescribed for treating high blood pressure (hypertension). It is a combination of two groups of drugs- namely, diuretics, and angiotensin II receptor blockers. Side Effects for Avalide
Some patients may experience side effects after taking the medication, while many others may not have any side effects at all. In most cases, the side effects of Avalide are mild, and include heartburn, mild stomach ache, pain in the muscles, mild headache, dry cough, drowsiness or dizziness, a stuffy nose, and sore throat.
In rare cases, however, the following serious side effects may occur – sudden change in weight (weight gain), jaundice, infrequent or above normal urination, difficulty breathing, chest pain, and swelling in the hands or legs. Precautions
Before using Avalide, you must inform your doctor about all the allergies you have as this drug may have constituents that can trigger intense allergic reactions or severe side effects. If you are allergic to hydrochlorothiazide or irbesartan, you must never take this drug without consulting your doctor. Also inform your doctor if you have any heart problems such as congestive heart failure or if you have had a stroke in the past. You must avoid using Avalide if you have kidney disease, gout, asthma, diabetes, and pancreatitis, or if you experience pain while urinating. Avalide Dosage
The Avalide dose is determined by a doctor according to the blood pressure of the patient, the past medical history of the patient, the way the patient responds to the drug, and other medications currently used by the patient for treating other diseases. The standard recommended dosage for patients who have just started blood pressure treatment is 150/2.5 mg once a day. Doctors usually advise patients to take the dose at fixed hours of the day with food. Interactions
Avalide can interact with other medicines including prescription drugs, over the counter drugs, and certain herbal products. Avalide may interact with drugs such as Allopurinol, barbiturates, certain cholesterol medicines, calcium supplements or antacids containing calcium, corticosteroids, narcotic pain relievers, certain diabetes medicines, Eplerenone, and lithium. Therefore, it is necessary that you inform your doctor about every medication you take before using Avalide. Apart from the above medications, Avalide also interacts with alcohol.
