General Information On Bondronat

Bondronat (generic name: Ibandronate) is mainly used for treating osteoporosis in women in the post-menopausal stage. You can buy Bondronat in the form of an oral medicine, as well as an injection. The drug works by slowing down the weakening of the bones, thus preventing further bone damage. Ibandronate is known to decrease the chances or risk of bone fractures such as hip fractures in patients. Other than that, the medicine can also be used for reducing excess calcium levels in patients with hypercalcemia.

Side Effects for Bondronat

Some of the common side effects associated with Bondronat include back pain, difficulty moving, headache, blurred vision, dizziness, muscle pain, muscle stiffness, nervousness, pounding in the ears, fast or slow heartbeat, and joint pain. Most of these symptoms subside as your body gets used to the drug, but if any of these worsen or persist, you need to contact your doctor and seek medical help. Some patients may also complain of bladder pain, cough with mucus, diarrhea, pain or a burning sensation while urinating, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite, lower back pain, muscle cramping or pain, nasal or ear congestion, pain in the legs or arms, redness, swelling or pain in the joints, sore throat, chest tightness, wheezing, and insomnia.

Precautions

You should inform your doctor if you are suffering from a dental problem or have undergone a tooth extraction or dental surgery, anemia, blood clotting problems, poor oral hygiene, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, hypocalcemia, hypovitaminosis D, kidney disease, previous bone fracture, or if you have a family history of osteoporosis. Consuming dairy along with Bondronat may increase the risk of side effects or worsen their impact. Therefore, you should avoid having dairy while on Bondronat treatment. Pregnant women are not advised to take the medicine, as it has not been established as safe for the unborn baby. As Bondronat causes dizziness, you should not drive a vehicle or operate a machine or do any such activity that requires you to be completely alert. While taking the medication, your bones may become more susceptible fractures, especially in the upper thigh. Therefore, you should try to stay away from jerks or sudden impacts that may result in a mishap.

Bondronat Dosage

Your doctor will advise you to take Bondronat 50mg at least one hour before your day’s first meal and before you take any other medicines. After taking Bondronat, you should not lie down or drink or eat anything for at least one hour. Depending on your individual needs, your response to treatment, and the form of Bondronat being used, you can take the drug either once a month, once a week, or everyday.

Interactions

As Bondronat can make one dizzy, taking it with other drugs that produce the same effect can prove harmful for you. Such drugs include sleeping pills, antidepressants, anti-seizure medications, anti-anxiety medications, and narcotic pain relievers. Other than these, you should also inform your doctor about all the medicinal products you are using at present, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, health supplements, and herbal products.
