General Information on Boniva Injection

Boniva Injection is prescribed in order to treat or prevent osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bone density is decreased and the patient becomes more susceptible to bone fractures. The generic name of the drug is Ibandronate, and it belongs to the class of drugs known as bisphosphonates. It is an injection that is administered into the patient’s vein. Boniva works by altering the formation and bone teardown process of the patient. In this way, bone density or bone mass is increased, and the loss of bones is prevented. Other than post-menopausal women, Boniva can also be used for preventing osteoporosis in cancer patients whose disease has spread to their bones.

Side Effects for Boniva Injection

Back pain, diarrhea, headache, swelling or redness in the eyes, nausea, an upset stomach, or pain in the legs or arms are the common side effects of Boniva Injection. Some patients may also experience local site reactions such as swelling or redness at the site of the injection. Most of these side effects are temporary and subside within a few days. However, if any of these become intolerable, you should contact your doctor and seek medical help.

Some serious but rare side effects of Boniva Injection include pain during, or difficulty swallowing, chest pain, severe bone, muscle, or joint pain, jaw pain, heartburn, burning or pain under the ribs, or unusual pain in the hip or thigh. These may be symptoms of some new complications, and you should immediately contact your doctor if you experience any of these side effects.

Precautions

Before you buy Boniva Injection, you should inform your doctor if you have a vitamin D deficiency or kidney disease. You should also tell him/her if you have trouble swallowing or if you have an ulcer in your esophagus or stomach. Under these conditions, your doctor will need to conduct some special tests to ensure that Boniva is the right medication for you. Your doctor will also not give you this injection if you cannot stand or sit upright for continuously one hour. The drug is known to cause problems in the esophagus or stomach, and therefore, you will be advised not to lie down after at least 60 minutes after taking the shot. As Boniva Injection can also cause osteonecrosis of the jaw, you should not take the drug if you are already suffering from a gum infection or loose teeth, or if you have recently undergone a surgery or injury of the gums.

Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers are also advised to take Boniva Injection only if extremely necessary. It is not known whether it harms the unborn baby or nursing child, so it would not be wise to take any kind of risk without consulting a doctor.

Boniva Injection Dosage

Boniva Injection 3mg is given to a patient intravenously once in 3 months. The injection can be given at any time of the day, and no dietary restrictions need to be followed.

Interactions

Some of the drugs that may interact with Boniva Injection include aspirin, ketoprofen, ketorolac, piroxicam, naproxen, ibuprofen, diflunisal, diclofenac, and indomethacin. Apart from these, you should also inform your doctor about all the prescription and non-prescription drugs you are taking at present.
