General Information On Byetta Injection
Byetta, an injectable medication belonging to a class of drugs that mimic hormones called incretins, is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Byetta keeps in check the blood glucose levels by making the pancreas produce more insulin and by slowing down glucose absorption from digested food. It reduces appetite so as to reduce glucose consumption. It is injected under the skin (subcutaneous) and not into a vein.
Side Effects/Precautions For Byetta Injection
Most side effects of Byetta or Exenatide result due to excessive usage of the drug which results in lower than normal blood sugar levels. Indications of very low blood sugar levels are dizziness, paling of the skin, numbness and sweating more than normal. Sugar levels have to be monitored regularly as very low levels can be potentially fatal. Weight loss is a common side effect as the Byetta drug causes a decrease in appetite. In order to make up for the loss of nutrients, supplements have to be taken to stay in good health. Other common side effects include nausea, jittery feeling and stomach acidity which can lead to reflux or GERD.
Individuals with a history of pancreatitis can develop complication with brand or generic Byetta, which can be fatal. If you have gall stones and liver problems you should mention these conditions and any medication you take for the same. Exenatide has been associated with renal failure in those with kidney problems. Hence, it is not prescribed for those with kidney problems. Individuals with a transplant are at a higher risk of renal failure and hence should be closely monitored when being treated. It is not known if brand or generic Byetta can interfere with pregnancy. Byetta Injection Dosage
Byetta Injection is a solution that is available in 5mcg and 10mcg doses. It is a subcutaneous injection which is administered twice every day, ideally one hour before meals. However, a gap of at least six hours has to be maintained between the two doses. It is recommended by doctors not to administer this drug after a meal. Depending upon the clinical response of the patient, the dosage can be increased to 10 mcg two times every day after 30 days of therapy. Byetta Injection should be administered as a subcutaneous injection either in the thigh, upper arm or the abdomen.
