General Information On Calcort

Calcort is used for treating inflammatory conditions like asthma, allergic disorders, arthritis, certain tumor producing diseases, and disorders related to the blood, eyes, digestive system, heart, kidneys, and skin. Calcort is also known by its generic name Deflazacort, belongs to the category of drugs known as corticosteroids, which work by reducing inflammation and suppressing allergic reactions and immune system activities. You can buy Calcort in the form of an oral medication, and it can also be used in some transplant operations.

Side Effects for Calcort

Calcort can cause some mild to severe digestive disorders such as indigestion, bleeding, nausea, ulcers, and inflamed pancreas. Water retention, high blood pressure, salt retention, and heart failure can also surface. Muscle weakness, thinning of the skin and bones, impaired healing of the skin, acne, and bruising are also reported by some Calcort patients. The drug can also lead to some hormonal disorders in the patient’s body, including weight gain, excessive hair growth, increased appetite, menstrual disorders, and diabetes. Using Calcort for a long time can result in opaque lenses or cataracts, glaucoma, and slow growth in children.

Precautions

Before taking Calcort, you should inform your doctor if you have a heart problem, blood clotting disorder, high blood pressure, digestive disorders like esophagitis, diverticulitis, peptic ulcers, or ulcerative colitis, diabetes, herpes, brittle bones, kidney, thyroid, or liver problems, myasthenia gravis, epilepsy, TB (tuberculosis), or any psychiatric problem like depression or mood disorders. You should also inform your doctor if you have taken corticosteroids in the past and have developed muscle related problems. Calcort is not usually recommended for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, and your doctor will advise you to avoid getting pregnant while on this medication. The tablets contain lactose, so make sure you consult your doctor if you are lactose intolerant.

Calcort Dosage

For adults, the recommended dose is Calcort 3-19mg once a day, but it can also be increased to Calcort 120mg per day depending on the patient’s medical condition. If you are suffering from severe asthma, you may be given Calcort 48mg to 72mg every day. Children are given the dosage as per their weight. Kids can be given Calcort 0.25mg to 1.5mg/kg per day depending on their medical condition and response to the treatment. You can buy Calcort tablets in 1mg, 6mg, 24mg, and 30mg strengths, which, again, depends on the recommended dosage as determined by your doctor.

Interactions

You should inform your doctor about all the prescription and non-prescription medicines you are taking at present. He or she will not recommend you to use Calcort if you are already taking medicines for treating epilepsy, diabetes, high blood pressure, and relaxing your muscles. You should also inform your doctor if you are using any medications for infections such as ketoconazole or rifampicin, aminoglutethimides for treating prostate or breast disease, diuretics, anti-coagulants, antacids, and hormonal therapy medicines including contraceptive pills. Avoid taking Calcort together with drugs that contain salicylates such as aspirin, as a combination of these two can cause adverse reactions in the patient.
