General Information on Camptostar Injection
This drug is used in the treatment of colon cancer. It is an antineoplastic agent of the Topoisomerase I inhibitor class which prevents DNA from unwinding. Camptostar Injection is a semisynthetic derivative of camptothecin. It is an alkaloid which can be chemically synthesized or extracted from plants like Camptotheca acuminate.
Side Effects/Precautions for Camptostar Injection
The most severe side effect of brand or generic Camptostar Injection is severe diarrhea and extreme suppression of the human immune system. Chemically known as Irinotecan, it should be administered only by a physician who is experienced in dealing with cancer therapeutic agents. Camptostar Injection drug can induce both late and early forms of severe diarrhea. Early diarrhea can also be accompanied by abdominal cramping, intestinal hyper peristalsis, diaphoresis, flushing, increased salivation and rhinitis.
Late diarrhea can occur 24 hours after administration of the brand or generic Camptostar Injection and can be potentially life threatening, as it can be prolonged and lead to electrolyte imbalance, sepsis and dehydration. Patients with these symptoms should be monitored carefully. To overcome dehydration, fluid and electrolyte replacements should be given. Subsequent doses of Camptostar Injection should be reduced to avoid these adverse reactions. The patient may require hospitalization and the diarrhea managed with the aggressive use of antidiarrheals. Irinotecan can suppress the immune system with a steep fall in white blood count. While the bone marrow works hard to replace the neutrophils, the patient may experience neutropenia or a lack of neutrophils in the blood.
Camptosar Injection Dosage
Camptosar Injection is supplied as 20 mg / ml, 40 mg /2 ml, 100 mg/5 ml and 300 mg / 15 ml vials and is used in combination with 5 - Fluorouracil (5-FU) and Leucovorin (LV). This injection is infused intravenously over a period of 90 minutes. In all dosage regimens, LV has to be administered immediately after Camptosar Injection, followed immediately by 5-FU. The dosage of this drug and 5 FU have to be suitably modified to suit the tolerance levels of a patient. In single agent dosage regimens, this drug has to be administered intravenously over a 90 minute period for both once-a-week as well as once-every-three-weeks dosage schedules.
