General Information On Ciloxan
Ciloxan ophthalmic solution is indicated in the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by certain gram-positive and gram- negative microorganisms. The medicine is also used to treat ulcers in the cornea, produced by bacteria. Bacterial infection of the eyelids, called blepharitis is also amenable to this medicine. It is available as a sterile ointment in 3.5 g tubes. Ciloxan drug is a quinoline antibiotic; it controls the growth of the bacteria by interfering with their DNA and eventually, the bacteria are destroyed. The medicine is meant for treating eye diseases caused by bacteria and is not effective against other types of conditions such as fungus infections.
Side Effects / Precautions For Ciloxan
Ciprofloxacin HCL is the important ingredient of this medicine and it is recommended for treating bacterial eye infections. The ointment should not be used in children who are younger than two years. The medicine may blur your vision, briefly. Do not drive, climb heights or operate machinery until your sight is clear. Watering of eyes, mild irritation, puffing up of eyelids are some of the side effects, you may experience. A white-colored build-up in the eye may occur, when you are using brand or generic Ciloxan for corneal ulcers. Normally, this is just an indication that the treatment is taking effect.
You may notice hives, abnormal swelling of eyes or face, if you are allergic to Ciprofloxacin HCL or any of the ingredients of this medicine. Stop the medication immediately and consult your doctor. Even though there is no established contra-indication, obtain medical advice, before using brand or generic Ciloxan during pregnancy or breast-feeding. Do not wear contact lenses during this therapy and sterilize the lenses, when you are ready to resume wearing them.
Dosages For Ciloxan
Recommended dose of Ciloxan 0.30% ointment is half an inch of ribbon, three times a day, for the first two days. On the next five days, apply two applications of half inch ribbon per day; the ointment should be applied into the conjunctival sac. You can safely access the sac, by tilting your head back and pulling the lower eyelid down gently. For ulcers, your doctor may prescribe more frequent applications or vary the dose.
