General Information On Clobex
Clobex (generic name: Clobetasol propionate) is a topical medicine used to treat itchiness and inflammation caused by certain skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, rashes, and allergic reactions. Clobetasol propionate belongs to the category of corticosteroids that get absorbed into your skin when you apply it topically. Clobex needs to be applied directly on the affected areas of your skin. Since this is a very potent corticosteroid, it should not be used by children, unless the doctor gives the go-ahead for the same.
Side Effects for Clobex
Some common side effects of Clobex include skin rash, redness, burning or itching, cracking or dry skin, softening or thinning of the skin, irritation or skin rash around the mouth, swelling of the hair follicles, temporary loss of hair, spider veins, change in skin color on the treated area, pimples, blisters, or crusting of the treated skin and stretch marks. If you absorb too much of the drug through your skin, you may experience blurred vision or see halos around lights, mood changes, insomnia, puffiness of the face, weight gain, tiredness, and muscle weakness. Under such circumstances, you should stop using Clobex at once and contact your doctor to inform him or her about your condition. An allergic reaction to the drug may be identified by hives, rashes, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness, or swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue.
Precautions
You should not use Clobex if you are allergic to clobetasol or other steroids like dexamethasone or hydrocortisone. Before taking the medicine, you should also inform your doctor if you have diabetes, immune system problems, poor blood circulation, or any other skin conditions like perioral dermatitis or rosacea. You should not use Clobex if you have sores or an infection in the area. If used on children for a long time, the drug can get absorbed into their skin and hamper their growth. You should use Clobex during pregnancy or the breastfeeding stage only if it is extremely necessary. As the drug can cause blurred vision at times, you should not perform any activity that requires clear vision, such as driving a vehicle or operating a machine.
Clobex Dosage
Clobex 0.05% has to be applied on the affected area twice a day not exceeding Clobex 50gms a week, as it may suppress your hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis. Other than that, you should not continue using this medicine for more than 2 weeks. The drug has to be stored at 20º to 25ºC and should not be used on patients less than 18 years of age. Your doctor will not recommend you to use Clobex on the face, underarms, or groin, but this depends on your medical condition. Make sure that your hands and the area to be treated are clean before you apply the medicine.
Interactions
Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Clobex if you are already using oral corticosteroids like prednisone, drugs that suppress immunity like cyclosporine, or other topical corticosteroids like hydrocortisone. Other than these drugs, you should inform your doctor about all the topical and non-topical medicines you are taking at present.
