General Information On Combivir

Combivir is a combination of zidovudine and lamivudine. This antiviral medication is used in combination with other drugs to inhibit the reproduction of the HIV virus. Precautions

A Combivir capsule usually contains 150mg of lamivudine and 300mg of zidovudine. Doctors recommend one capsule of Combivir daily to those weighing less than 30 kg, while 2 capsules may be prescribed to adult users. You should swallow the whole tablet and should not crush or chew it. As Combivir can affect the liver, doctors may advise you to undergo blood tests and liver tests to detect any abnormalities. Take the right dose of this medicine as per the doctor’s prescription and in case of an overdose take the patient immediately to the hospital.

Interactions

Combivir may not work effectively if you use it with some other herbal medication or over the counter products. Therefore, talk to the doctor about all prescription, non prescription and herbal supplements that you are using before you buy Combivir. Some of the medications that can interact with Combivir include drugs that lower blood count or decrease the functionality of bone marrow, drugs used for treating kidney disorders, NSAIDs like ibuprofen, probenecid, zalcitabine, ribravirin and stavudine. Do not use any other medicine containing zidovudine or lamivudine when using Combivir. If you are using clarithromycin, then keep a minimum gap of two hours between the dosages of both medicines.
