General Information on Cordaptive
Cordaptive is a prescription drug used for lowering cholesterol levels. It is a combination of two drugs specifically meant for patients who have high LDL cholesterol and low HDL in their body. The main ingredient in the medicine is Nicotinic Acid, which works by reducing cholesterol in the body. The drug also contains Laropiprant, which reduces flushes caused due to niacin. Laropiprant does not have any effect on your cholesterol levels. Cordaptive is available as an oral tablet.
Side Effects for Cordaptive
Nicotinic Acid can cause uncomfortable side effects in patients such as flushing, redness, hot flashes, and itching. The Laropiprant present in Cordaptive reduces these side effects. Some patients experience higher liver enzyme levels while taking this drug, but once they discontinue it, their enzymes go back to their normal levels. On rare occasions, the glucose levels of some patients may also increase slightly, while others may develop hepatitis or myopathy. Some patients may also experience headache, back pain, dizziness, chest pain, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and dizziness.
You should not buy Cordaptive if you are allergic to Nicotinic Acid or Laropiprant. An allergic reaction to the drug may be identified by severe dizziness, difficulty breathing, and hives or swelling of the face, throat, or tongue. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should immediately stop using Cordaptive and seek medical help.
Precautions
Cordaptive is not recommended to patients with peptic ulcers, arterial bleeding, or abnormal liver functioning. You should also inform your doctor if you are suffering from a heart, liver or kidney disease or if you have a history of heart attack or stroke. In order to reduce the flushing effect of the medicine, you should not take it with alcohol or a hot beverage. As some patients experience dizziness after taking Cordaptive, you should not drive a vehicle or do any such activity that requires complete alertness. The safety of Cordaptive during pregnancy has not yet been established, so pregnant women should take it only if clearly indicated. Breastfeeding mothers should also not take this drug unless extremely necessary, as it may pass into the breast milk and harm the nursing child.
Cordaptive Dosage
Each oral tablet of Cordaptive has 1000mg Niacin or Nicotinic Acid and 20mg Laropiprant. Initially, you will be given a smaller dose of the drug so that your body gets used to the compound. After around 4 weeks, the dosage can be increased depending on your medical condition and response to treatment. You will be given only one Cordaptive tablet a day in the beginning, and after 4 weeks, your doctor may ask you to take 2 tablets daily. Take the tablet with a full glass of water, and not with any hot drink or alcohol.
Interactions
As Cordaptive causes dizziness; you should not take it with other drugs that cause the same effect. These include sedatives, narcotic pain relievers, antidepressants, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medicines, muscle relaxants, and tranquilizers. Other than these, you should inform your doctor about all the medicinal products you are taking at present, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, herbal products, and health supplements.
