General Information On Depen
A chelating agent, Depen is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, cystinuria (an inherited medical condition characterized by the buildup of cysteine crystals in the patient’s kidney), and Wilson’s disease (a genetic disorder characterized by the buildup of copper in the liver, eyes, and other body parts).
Depen is effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis as it helps alleviate swelling, pain, and tenderness in the joints. For the treatment of cystinuria, this drug helps the body get rid of cystine, a substance that can cause kidney stones. Penicillamine (generic name of this drug) is used to treat Wilson’s disease, as it helps the body flush out extra copper, thus reducing the chances of damage to body parts such as the liver.
Side Effects for Depen
Contact your doctor if you notice any of the following uncommon but serious side effects: blood in the urine, stomach pain, double vision, sore throat, fever, chills, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or muscle weakness.
Stop your medication and seek medical help if Depen triggers an allergic reaction (wheezing, shortness of breath, trouble breathing, hives, rashes, itching, or swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or other body parts.
The common and mild side effects that you may experience while starting the treatment are: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mouth sores, decreased taste, and loss of appetite. In case any of the aforementioned symptoms last for more than a few days or worsen, you must talk to your doctor.
Precautions
Before starting the treatment, tell your doctor if you are allergic to Penicillamine. Also, inform him/her about your medical history, especially if you have severe liver or kidney disease. Do not use Depen if you have taken it earlier and suffered from blood cell damage as a result.
This medicine should only be used if directed by a doctor during pregnancy. Lactating women should not buy Depen as the medicine can cause harm to a breastfeeding infant.
Depen Dosage
The dosage of this medicine depends on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to treatment. You can buy Depen in Depen 125 mg and 250 mg strengths.
You should take this medicine on an empty stomach with a full glass of water (8 ounces). Take Depen at least one hour before a meal and two hours after consuming a meal. If you are using other medicines, then ensure there is an adequate gap of at least one hour between Penicillamine and other medicines. In addition, follow your doctor’s instructions about fluid intake, diet, and beverages or foods to avoid during treatment
Interactions
Certain drugs such as gold-therapy products (aurothioglucose, auranofin), gold sodium thiomalate, antimalarial drugs (primaquine, mefloquine, chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, and others), phenylbutazone, or chemotherapy drugs should not be taken with Depen.
Certain medications such as digoxin, antacids, vitamin supplements, and mineral supplements can decrease the effectiveness of this medicine. You should take the above drugs only if directed by your doctor. Make sure you follow your instructions when taking these drugs with Depen.
Other drugs that are not listed above may also interact with Depen. Do not start any new medication during the course of treatment without consulting your doctor.
