General Information On Duac

Your doctor may recommend you to buy Duac (generic name: Clindamycin benzoyl peroxide) if you are suffering from inflammatory acne vulgaris. Clindamycin belongs to the category of antibiotics that stop the growth of bacteria responsible for causing acne, thus decreasing acne pimples. The medicine also contains benzoyl peroxide, which reduces the production of oil or sebum in your skin, thus keeping your pores open. Duac is available in the form of a topical application which needs to be applied directly on the pimples to be treated.

Side Effects for Duac

Burning, itching, redness, dryness, and peeling of the skin on the applied area may occur, which can be cured by skin moisturizing lotions and creams to some extent. When Duac gets absorbed into your skin, it may cause Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea, which is caused by resistant bacteria. You may notice its symptoms after weeks of treatment, and thus, you should watch out for stomach pain or cramping, persistent diarrhea, or blood or mucus in the stools. An allergic reaction to Duac may be identified by itching or swelling of the face, tongue, throat, or lips, trouble breathing, severe dizziness, or rash.

Precautions

You should not use Duac if your skin is dry, sun burnt, broken, chapped, or irritated. As the medicine can bleach your hair or fabrics, you should avoid touching it to your hair, clothes, or other items. Before taking Duac, you should inform your doctor if you have an intestinal disorder like regional enteritis, antibiotic associated colitis, or ulcerative colitis. As the drug may make your skin more sensitive to the sun, you should avoid being exposed to direct sunlight, sunlamps, or tanning booths, and if you need to go out, you should wear protective clothes and apply sunscreen. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not use Duac unless it is clearly indicated, as its safety during these conditions has not yet been established. Make sure that your hands and face are clean and dry before applying the medication and avoid getting it into your eyes, nose, or mouth. You should not stop using this medicine if you do not see any results, as it may take a few weeks to show signs of improvement.

Duac Dosage

Duac should be used only once a day; however, the frequency of application depends on your acne condition. Store Duac gel between 36º to 46º F, but avoid freezing it. Keep the tube tightly closed and away from children and/or pets.

Interactions

Before using Duac, you should inform your doctor if you are taking erythromycin in either the topical or oral form, including Emcin Clear, Erygel, Eryderm, Erysol, EES, Erythrocin, or Pediazole. Also make it a point to talk to your doctor about any oral drugs that you are using for treating acne, in addition to topical applications including gels, ointments, and creams. Additionally, it is recommended that you consult him/her if you are using any other prescription and non-prescription drugs at present, including herbal products, vitamins, and mineral supplements.
