Effexor is an oral medication used for treating depression. It boosts energy levels and elevates one’s moods, thus helping in restoring a person’s interest in daily life. Venlafaxine is an antidepressant that belongs to the category of selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors or SSNRIs, which work by restoring the balance of brain chemicals known as norepinephrine and serotonin. Side Effects for Effexor

You may experience dizziness, nervousness, increased sweating, dry mouth, blurred vision, changes in weight or appetite, mild nausea, impotence, constipation, difficulty having an orgasm, decreased interest in sex or strange dreams while using Effexor. However, you need to contact a doctor immediately if you experience seizures, stiff muscles, tremors, hallucinations, overactive reflexes, loss of coordination, memory problems, headache, unsteadiness, easy bruising, trouble breathing, chest tightness, coughing, and fainting. You should also inform your doctor if you notice symptoms like anxiety, sleeping trouble, panic attacks, suicidal thoughts, or experience feelings of being hostile, agitated, irritable, impulsive, restless, hyperactive, severely depressed, or aggressive.

Precautions

Before taking Effexor, you should inform your doctor if you have manic depression or bipolar disorder, kidney disease, a liver disease like cirrhosis, high blood pressure, glaucoma, seizure, epilepsy, high cholesterol levels, blood clotting, or bleeding disorders. You may have suicidal thoughts while using Effexor, especially if you are less than 24 years of age, so you should visit your doctor regularly and consult him/her if this happens to you. Your family should also know that you are taking this drug and if you are having such thoughts, so that they can seek medical help if a mishap takes place. Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Effexor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as this drug is known to cause harm to an unborn or nursing baby. As Effexor causes dizziness and blurred vision, you should not drive a vehicle, operate a machine, or do any such activity that requires you to be completely alert and have good vision.

Effexor Dosage

Initially, you will be advised to take Effexor 37.5mg per day administered as a single dose, and the dosage can be increased based on your condition and response to the treatment. The maximum dose of the medicine that can be given to a patient is Effexor 225mg once a day. The tablet has to be swallowed whole, without breaking, dividing, crushing, chewing or dissolving it with food.

Interactions

You should not take Effexor if you are already taking NSAIDs, antiplatelet drugs, blood thinners, MAO inhibitors, other antidepressants, and Triptans. In order to avoid excessive dizziness, you should not take Effexor with other drugs that cause the same effect, like antihistamines, anti-seizure medicines, muscle relaxants, narcotic pain relievers, sleeping pills, and tranquilizers. Aspirin increases your risk of bleeding, and thus, you should not take it with Effexor. If necessary, your doctor will advise you to take a very low dose of aspirin so that no serious side effects surface.
