General Information On Efudex Cream

Efudex Cream is often prescribed to treat Actinic Keratoses. Small patches, whether raised or flat with white and rough surfaces, may get formed when your skin remains exposed to the sun for a long time, especially on the arms, face, and legs. If not handled correctly, these patches become cancerous and form a type of skin cancer termed squamous cell caricoma. Fluorouracil, which is present in Efudex Cream, is an anti-metabolite, which blocks the growth of unhealthy cells in the skin so that they die and the healthy ones are left intact. This medicine is available in the form of a topical cream which needs to be applied directly on the patches.

Side Effects for Efudex Cream

Skin irritation, dryness, redness, burning, swelling, pain, changes in skin color, or tenderness at the sites of application may occur. Sometimes, you may also experience sleeping trouble, an abnormal taste in the mouth, temporary hair loss, irritability, and eye irritation like watering or stinging. These are mild side effects that get better within a few days, but you need to notify your doctor if any of these worsen or persist. Some rare but serious side effects of Efudex Cream include bloody diarrhea, easy bruising or bleeding, signs of infection like chills, fever, or persistent throat soreness, stomach or abdominal pain, and vomiting. Although the drug rarely causes any allergic reactions, it can be identified by itching or swelling of the face, tongue, throat, or lips, breathing trouble, severe dizziness, or rash.

Precautions

Before using Efudex Cream, you should inform your doctor if you have an enzyme deficiency like dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase or DPD, redness, irritation, infections, or open sores on the skin. As the cream may increase your sensitivity to the sun, you should avoid being exposed to harsh sunlight, tanning booths, or sunlamps. If you need to go out, you should wear protective clothes and use sunscreen. Before applying moisturizer or sunscreen, wait for at least 2 hours after using Efudex Cream. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not use the medicine unless extremely needed. This is because the safety of Efudex Cream during these conditions has not yet been established.

Efudex Cream Dosage

10gm and 40gm Efudex Cream tubes contain 5% fluorouracil. Wash the affected area properly with soap and warm water and dry it with a soft towel. Wear medical gloves and apply the medicine with your forefinger. Spread the cream gently on the affected parts and make sure that you don’t get it into contact with other body parts, such as the eyes, mouth or nose. You should not cover the affected area with a bandage. Using Efudex Cream more than required will not help you get better faster, but will instead only increase the risks of developing side effects.

Interactions

Your doctor will not advise you to buy Efudex Cream if you are already using other skin products including lotions, creams, medicines, or cosmetics. Apart from that, you should not use it with other oral or topical products that contain fluorouracil, as they may worsen the side effects of Efudex Cream.
