General Information On Elestat
Elestat drops are used in the effective treatment of ocular allergies. These allergies can be causes due to change in season or any other source. The active ingredient, Epinastine, has immediate effect when the drops are used. It can soothe inflamed and irritated eyes in a couple of minutes and its effect can last for anything between 8 to 12 hours. These generic Elestat eye drops are safe to use on children too above the age of 3. In order for the medication to be completely effective, it should be used continuously until the source of the allergy goes away, even if there are not symptoms.
Side Effects / Precautions for Elestat
The Elestat drug does have a few side effects that one needs to be aware of. It can cause hyperaemia, folliculosis, burning and pruritus in the eyes. It can also cause side effects like upper respiratory infections (sinusitis, rhinitis, pharyngitis and increased coughing). Headaches are also very common. Patients are advised not Epinastine as relief for contact lens irritation. In fact patients are advised not to wear contact lenses at all as the preservatives in the drops are absorbed by them.
While administering generic Elestat drops, care should be taken to see that the dropper does not touch the eye. Even more care should be taken to ensure that nothing from your surrounding like your fingers, clothes etc, touch the dropper. If this happens you can be at risk of contracting a secondary infection. Droppers should also never be shared.
Elestat Dosage
The recommended dose for Elestat sterile ophthalmic solution is one drop per day, either in one eye or both the eyes (as advised by your ophthalmologist). The eye drops are administered daily twice in order to prevent itching which is due to allergic conjunctivitis. Treatment with Elestat must continue even if there are no further symptoms. The therapy should not be interrupted till the pollen season lasts. The drug should be administered throughout the period of exposure. Care should be taken as exposure to allergens may aggravate the condition. Any changes to the dosage should be done with your doctor’s advice.
