General Information On Eligard
Eligard or leuprolide acetate is a prescription drug given to patients via injection. It is often prescribed to men suffering from advanced prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is often exacerbated by high levels of the male hormone testosterone. Leuprolide reduces the amount of this hormone, and so, the growth of the cancer cells is stopped or slowed down and providing relief from symptoms like painful and difficult urination. If it has been recommended by your doctor that you buy Eligard, you should take the drug as recommended.
Side Effects for Eligard
Sometimes, Eligard may cause an allergic reaction in patients like hives, swelling on the face, lips, throat or tongue, and breathing problems. Other side effects of the drug may include pain in the bones, loss of bladder control, weight gain, frequent urination, vomiting, nausea, and sudden weakness or numbness. Less serious effects are acne, night sweats, testicle pain, loss of libido, depression, and itching, swelling or burning in the place where the injection was given.
Precautions
Eligard is not a drug meant for women. Tell your doctor beforehand if you are already suffering from migraine, kidney or heart disease, depression, blood in the urine, asthma, epilepsy, or bone cancer. You should also inform your physician if anyone in your family has osteoporosis. You should stop taking steroids, stop drinking alcohol and stop smoking while taking this medicine. Do not forget to get your blood tested often in order to monitor whether the medication is working for you or not. This will also help your doctor determine how long the drug should be given to you. Even after you stop using Eligard, you should get your blood tested for up to 3 months in order to keep track of your pituitary gland functions and hormone levels.
Eligard Dosage
Eligard comes in 4 different dosages: 7.5 mg, 22.5 mg, 30 mg and 45 mg. The Eligard 7.5mg injection is given to the patient once a month, 22.5mg is given once in 3 months, 30mg once in 4 months, and 45mg once in 6 months. The medication is released slowly in the patient’s blood over a 1 to 6 month period. For example, Eligard 22.5mg gets released in 3 months, while Eligard 45mg keeps releasing the medicine over 6 months. Once you have mixed the medicine, you should use it within 30 minutes. Otherwise, it will become contaminated, and you will need to throw it away. Every time you get injected, try to change the location of the ‘shot’ on your skin so that no problems are developed under your skin. Discard the medical supplies and needles once used; never re-use them.
Interactions
You should not buy Eligard if you are allergic to medications like goserelin, buserelin, nafarelin and histrelin. It may not be the right drug for you if you are already on seizure medicines. Their combination can increase the level of testosterone in your body and may lead to further complications.
