General Information On Elitek
Elite (generic name: Rasburicase) is used for managing high levels of uric acid in the blood of patients who are receiving cancer treatment for lymphoma, leukemia, and some tumors. After chemotherapy, cancer cells get destroyed and release high amounts of uric acid into the patient’s blood. Rasburicase is a recombinant urate-oxidase enzyme which removes excess uric acid from the patient’s body through the kidneys. You can buy Elitek in the form of 1.5mg and 7.5mg vials, which is administered in a patient’s vein for around 30 minutes.
Side Effects for Elitek
Some of the commonly experienced side effects of Elitek include stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, anxiety, constipation, diarrhea, fever, mild rash, sore throat, and swelling of the feet or hands. Most of these symptoms get better as your body adjusts to the drug, but you need to contact your doctor if any of these become intolerable. Some serious but rare side effects of Elitek include changes in your mental state, headache, dizziness, tiredness, blue colored lips, shortness of breath, uneven heartbeat, seizure, white patches around or inside the mouth or lips, dark colored urine, yellow or pale skin, and severe weakness. An allergic reaction to the drug can be identified by chest tightness or pain, fainting, difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling of the throat, tongue, lips, or face.
Precautions
Before taking Elitek, you should inform your doctor if you have some other medical conditions, especially metabolic conditions like G6PD deficiency or red blood cell damage like methemoglobinemia or hemolysis. However, consult your doctor if you have a medical history of dehydration or kidney disease or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Children below 2 years of age should be given this drug with caution, as they are more sensitive to its side effects. As Elitek causes dizziness, you should not drive a vehicle, operate a machine, or do any other activity that requires complete alertness. If you are having a professional administer Elitek, you should take someone else along with you as he/she can drive you back home after you receive treatment.
Elitek Dosage
Initially, you will be given Elitek 0.2mg/kg, which will be given to you intravenously for a period of around 30 minutes. Elitek will be given to you every day for 5 days, and chemotherapy will be started after 4 to 24 hours of the first Elitek dose. Depending on your medical condition, the dosage given can also be Elitek 1.5mg or Elitek 7.5mg. The vial cannot be taken as a direct injection, and its overdose can worsen your side effects instead of helping your condition. You should store the reconstituted or diluted solution between 2 to 8 degrees Celsius without letting it freeze.
Interactions
Your doctor will not advise you to buy Elitek if you are already using allopurinol. Apart from that, the medicine can also interact with uric acid available in blood sample tubes, which may result in false low uric acid levels. Therefore, if you are to undergo a laboratory test, you should inform the lab personnel that you are using Elitek. Apart from that, you should inform your doctor about all the medicinal products you are taking at present, including prescription and non-prescription drugs, herbal products, and health supplements.
