General Information On Elocon
Elocon or Mometasone Furoate is a topical steroid used for treating skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, rash and allergies. Basically, it has mometasone furoate USP which is a synthetic corticosteroid having anti-inflammatory activity. It decreases inflammation, swelling, redness and itching in the area. You can buy Elocon in different forms including ointment, lotion and cream. Your doctor will examine your skin condition and prescribe the right type of product for you.
Side Effects for Elocon
You should immediately contact your doctor if you notice adverse reactions such as hives, swelling on the face, tongue, throat or lips, or breathing problems. When you absorb Elocon through your skin, you may also experience mood changes, insomnia, blurred vision, weight gain, muscle weakness, tiredness and puffiness on the face. If you are observing skin rashes, burning, dryness, redness or itching in the area, you should stop using the drug and inform your doctor immediately.
Other less serious effects of Elocon include swelling in the hair follicles, spider veins, change in the color of the skin where you apply the drug, stretch marks, blisters, crusting, pimples in the area, or tingling or numbness in the treated skin.
Precautions
The absorption of corticosteroids in the skin may produce reversible HPA or hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis suppression which can lead to glucocorticosterois insufficiency, especially after you stop using the drug. While you are using Elocon, you can also experience Cushing’s syndrome, glucosuria and hyperglycemia. Therefore, it is important to get evaluated from time to time to monitor HPA axis suppression. If it is diagnosed, you should try to reduce the usage of the drug, or at least decrease its frequency of application.
Before using the drug, you should take a patch test in order to notice any serious side effects. If any concomitant skin infection develops, then appropriate anti-bacterial or anti-fungal agent needs to be used until the infection gets controlled adequately. Last but not least, do not forget to wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying Elocon.
Elocon Dosage
You can buy Elocon in tubes of 15 g and 45 g. Apply it only a thin film of the ointment or cream once a day; Elocon is safe for use on children more than 2 years of age. You should not apply the drug on a child’s diaper area, especially if he or she still wears or needs plastic pants or diapers. It should also not be used with an occlusive dressing. Discontinue use once the skin condition has been treated. Each gram of the drug contains Elocon 1mg in a base of hexylene glycol, propylene glycol stearate, white wax, purified water, white petrolatum and phosphoric acid.
Interactions
Although oral drugs or injections usually do not interact with topical drugs, they may interact with some over-the-counter and prescription drugs, vitamins, minerals, drugs and herbal products. Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking before starting Elocon. Also do not start any new drug without informing your doctor.
