General Information On EMLA Cream
EMLA Cream is an anesthetic that is used to prevent pain. This medication is used prior to certain procedures like skin grafts, skin laser surgery and insertion of IV lines. This medication is only meant for the skin and should not be used on any other part of the body. This drug should be applied at a proper time as advised by your doctor. This drug should be applied for at least one hour before your medical procedure. Your doctor will clean the area thoroughly before applying this cream.
Side Effects / Precautions for EMLA Cream
Using EMLA Cream or Lidocaine W/ Prilocaine Topical cream may lead to redness, tingling and lightening of the skin. These are common side effects but if they persist contact your doctor immediately. When you use brand or generic EMLA cream it can lead to serious side effects like blisters, dizziness, nervousness, breathing trouble and mental confusion. EMLA cream drug also causes allergies rash, itching, dizziness and swelling. If you have any of these symptoms contact your doctor immediately. If you experience any other symptoms other than those mentioned inform your doctor before your condition worsens.
Before you use EMLA cream or Lidocaine W / Prilocaine Topical cream, inform your doctor if you have a history of blood disorders, allergies and liver problems. Since it is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk, inform your doctor before breast feeding. Avoid using brand or generic EMLA cream if you are pregnant. Use it only under your doctor's supervision.
EMLA Cream Dosage
EMLA Cream is an anesthetic cream available in 5 gm tubes. In cases of minor dermal procedures like venipuncture and intravenous punctures, it is recommended to apply 2.5 g of this drug over the surface area of the skin for at least one hour. In major dermal procedures like skin graft harvesting, you should apply 2 g of this cream per every 10 cm2 of the skin and allow it to remain on your skin for at least two hours. When EMLA cream is used on adult male genital skin prior to a local anesthetic infiltration, a thick layer of this cream should be applied to the skin surface for about 15 minutes.
