General Information on Exelon
Patients suffering from dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or Parkinson’s disease are prescribed Exelon. The medication belongs to the category of Para sympathomimetic agents. Exelon works by reducing the breakdown of acetylcholine, which is a chemical present in the brain. The chemical is of great significance for controlling processes like thinking, reasoning and remembering. Patients suffering from dementia are often diagnosed with a lower level of this chemical that can be improved by taking Exelon. The medication is prepared using rivastigmine tartrate and is available in three different forms – oral solution, capsules and transdermal patches.
Exelon Side Effects
Nausea and vomiting are the two most frequently reported side effects of Exelon. Other serious side effects that may occur at the initial stage of Exelon administration include loss of weight, loss of appetite, tremors, drowsiness, tiredness and diarrhea. Blood in the saliva or stools, headaches, poor vision, pale skin, confusion and a burning sensation while passing urine too are reported. Less common side effects associated with the medication include stomach pain, anxiety, itching and insomnia. Talk to your doctor if any of these conditions occur at any level of severity. An adjustment in Exelon dosage may be required to deal with these side effects.
Exelon Precautions
If you are prone to any type of allergy, it must be reported to the doctor as a precautionary measure before starting Exelon. Those having a history of diseases like lung disorders, sick sinus syndrome, seizures, asthma and tremors should also report same to the doctor. Those taking medications for the treatment of stomach ulcers, urination problems and epilepsy must discuss them with the doctor before using the medication. Recent loss in weight should be informed in advance to your doctor if he or she is recommending Exelon to you. Though the medication is not known to be harmful for pregnant or nursing women, you should discuss these conditions with the doctor before you buy Exelon.
Exelon Dosage
For patients suffering from dementia of Alzheimer’s disease, the recommended dosage ranges between Exelon 6 mg and Exelon 12 mg per day. The dosage per day is divided into two doses, each ranging between Exelon 3 mg and Exelon 6 mg. Those suffering from Parkinson’s disease are prescribed the dosage ranging between Exelon 3 mg and Exelon 12 mg. The dosage must be divided into two doses, each ranging between Exelon 1.5 mg and Exelon 6 mg.
If using Exelon patch, make sure that it is applied to a hairless area of your body. Also, a patch must be replaced after 24 hours, and a new spot must be chosen every time you replace a patch. Don’t use Exelon patch while taking Exelon in the oral or capsule form.
