General Information On Extavia

Extavia is used for the treatment of multiple sclerosis that is relapsing or recurring by nature. The drug is used to decrease the frequency of the clinical exacerbations of multiple sclerosis. However, the drug is not considered a cure for the condition. The drug only helps in reducing the frequency of the relapse of those symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis. The drug is effective in patients with early clinical episodes of multiple sclerosis. It is an interferon drug which is made from human proteins. The interferon helps in fighting against the viral infections in the body. Brand or generic Extavia acts upon the immune system. It helps in reducing the inflammation. Also the drug acts by limiting the activation of those immune cells which attack the myelin.

Side Effects / Precautions For Extavia

Less serious side effects of brand or generic Extavia which are more common in occurrence include headache, weakness, stomach pain, muscle pain, muscle weakness, sleeping problems (like insomnia), swelling in the feet or hands, skin rashes and irregular menstrual period. You must get medical help at once if any of these side effects prolong or become bothersome. Otherwise, you may inform your doctor if you have any of these side effects of Interferon Beta-1b and you may continue with the treatment.

Extavia may have certain serious side effects also. These may include anxiety, depression, restlessness, suicidal thoughts, thoughts or ideas of hurting own-self, trouble in sleeping and changes in mood. The drug may also cause alterations in the weight, pounding heartbeats, bruising/ oozing/ swelling/ other changes in the skin at the site of injection. Interferon Beta-1b may also lead to body pain, chills, fever, flu-like symptoms, stomach pain, loss of appetite, nausea and jaundice-like symptoms. Dosages For Extavia

Extavia drug is administered in the form of injections. The recommended dose of the drug during the first 2 weeks is 25% of total drug dosage which is 1 mL. Thus, 0.0625 mg (or 0.25 mL) of the drug is administered in week 1 and 2. In weeks 3 and 4, 50% of the total dose is administered that is 0.125 mg (or 0.5 mL). In week 5 and 6, 75% of the total drug dose is administered that is 0.1875 mg (or 0.75 mL). Week 7 onwards 100% of the drug dosage is administered, which is 0.25 mg or 1 mL of Extavia.
