General Information On Gabitril

Gabitril or Tiagabine hydrochloride or Tiagabine HCL is an oral medication used for treating epileptic seizure disorders like partial seizures. A seizure takes place when nerves are not able to communicate with each other efficiently. Tiagabine affects the neurotransmitters of the brain so that this kind of communication between the nerves is slowed down. Regular use of Gabitril, along with other anti-epileptic medicines, can reduce the frequency of seizures you may encounter. If you are a man or woman more than 12 years of age, then you can buy Gabitril to slow down the frequency of seizures if the drug is prescribed by your physician.

Side Effects for Gabitril

Mild side effects of Gabitril include dizziness, nausea, stomach pain, tremors, lack of energy, drowsiness, nervousness and abnormal thinking. You need to contact your doctor if you experience these or other more serious side effects like vision problems, serious rashes, speech and language problems, feeling confused, poor concentration, and worse seizures. A small percentage of people may experience suicidal thoughts and mood problems, which may be harmful for health. You should contact your doctor immediately if you are noticing sudden or unusual changes in your mood and if you are having suicidal thoughts or are thinking about harming yourself.

Precautions

You should take the medicine exactly as your doctor has told you and should not stop taking it without talking to your doctor. If you stop the drug suddenly, it may increase the chances of having seizures frequently. Avoid drinking alcohol or taking other medicines that may make you dizzy or sleepy. Do not operate machinery or drive a vehicle after taking Gabitril, as it may slow down your motor skills, and this may lead to a serious accident. You should not take this medicine if you already have a history of depression or suicidal attempts. You should also tell your doctor about any liver disease that you or someone in your family has. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Gabitril Dosage

Gabitril is available in 2mg, 4mg, 12mg and 16mg tablets to be taken orally. Initially, you will need to take only one tablet a day for a week and the dosage will be increased slowly when you will need to take it 2 to 4 times a day with food depending on your doctors recommendations. Usually, you will have to buy Gabitril in conjunction with other medicines and therefore, you should not totally rely on it alone and should not stop other anti-seizure medicines you are already taking unless your doctor has told you to do so. You will most likely first be given Gabitril 2mg tablets, and depending on your response to the therapy and medical condition, you may be increased to Gabitril 16mg tablets in a month or so if necessary. This medicine has to be taken regularly at almost the same time everyday. If you need to stop the medicine, then you will need to do that too slowly, instead of doing so suddenly.

Interactions

Inform your doctor about all the prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines you are taking at present, especially drugs used for quitting smoking and other anti-seizure medicines. When combined with antipsychotic medicines, isoniazids, bupropion, stimulants and alcohol, Gabitril may increase your chances of having seizures. The side effect of drowsiness may increase if you take Gabitril in combination with anti-anxiety drugs, medicines for sleep, narcotic pain relievers, anti-depressants and tranquilizers.
