General Information on Glyset

Glyset is used for the treatment of Type II diabetes (non-insulin-dependent diabetes) and is usually used in conjunction with a proper diet and exercise program. The medicine works by slowing the absorption of carbohydrates. This, in turn, ensures that sugar levels in your blood do not increase too much after a meal.

Side Effects of Glyset

Possible side effects of Miglitol are: abdominal pain, rash, flatulence, and diarrhea. All these symptoms usually appear during the first weeks of treatment. In case any of these symptoms last for more than a few weeks or worsen, then you must inform your doctor or pharmacist about the same. It is unlikely that this drug will trigger a serious allergic reaction (symptoms include: trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue, lips, or face, closing of the throat, itching, or dizziness). Contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately in case you notice any of these symptoms.

Precautions

You should not use this medication if you are allergic to it and if you have certain medical conditions. This is why it is important you inform your doctor about all of your medical conditions, especially if you have: kidney disease, an inflammatory bowel disease (example: Chron’s disease or ulcerative colitis), digestion disorders, or diabetic ketoacidosis.

This medication is not known to harm an unborn baby. With that said, you must use this drug during pregnancy only after consulting your doctor. This drug passes into breast milk, so if you are a breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using this drug.

In case you develop an infection or fever or if you are seriously injured, then immediately consult your doctor. In such cases, this medication may not be enough to control blood sugar level, and you may require insulin for some time.

Glyset Dosage

The recommended starting dosage is Glyset 25mg consumed orally thrice daily. You need to take this medicine with the first bite of your meal. Depending on your condition and response to the treatment, your doctor may increase/decrease your dosage.

If you miss a dose, then take it as soon as you remember. In case you remember just before your next dose is due, then only take the next dose and skip the missed dose. In no scenario should you take a double dose of Glyset.

Interactions

This medicine should not be used with digestive enzyme supplements, such as pancreatin (such as Creon, Pancrease, Donnazyme, Arco-Lase, Ku-Zyme, Cotayzm, and others). Also, before you buy Glyset, you must inform your doctor about all the medicines that you are taking, especially if you are using any of the following medicines: a calcium channel blocker (such as Isoptin, Calan, Procardia, Verelan, Adalat, Dilacor XR, Cardizem, and others), ranitidine (Zantac), propranolol (Inderal), estrogen (Ogen, Premarin, and others), steroid medication (Medrol, Deltasone, and others), water pill (Lozol, HCTZ, Thalitone, Diuril, Hydrodiuril, and others), thyroid medication (Levoxyl, Synthroid, and others), digoxin (Lanoxicaps, Lanoxin), or phenytoin (Dilantin).

Furthermore, before starting with the medication, inform your doctor about all the non-prescription drugs and herbal medicines that you are taking.
