General Information on Haldol
An antipsychotic medication, Haldol is used for treating control tics and vocal utterances related to Tourette’s syndrome. The medication is also used for treating certain mental/mood disorders such as schizoaffective disorders. In addition, doctors may also prescribe this medication to treat behavioral problems in hyperactive children when other medications/treatments have failed to produce positive results.
This drug is not approved for the treatment of dementia, as studies show that older adults with dementia may develop fatal side effect such as heart failure if they take the drug.
Side effects of Haldol
Possible side effects of this drug include: drowsiness, dizziness, headache, disturbance in sleep, hyperactivity, tiredness, extra pyramidal effects (defined by sudden, involuntary movements of neck, head, eyes etc.), and anxiety. You should consult your doctor if the aforementioned symptoms persist or worsen. In some cases, Haloperidol causes the following symptoms: stiff facial expressions, restlessness, tremor, muscle spasms, stiffness in muscles, and drooling. If you notice any of these symptoms, consult your doctor immediately.
In rare cases, this drug may cause tardive dyskinesia. The symptoms of this condition are uncontrolled, repetitive, and jerky movements in the face and fingers, such as rapid blinking of the eye, grimacing, smacking of the lips, twitching of the fingers, and tongue thrusting. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the above-mentioned symptoms.
In rare cases, this medicine may lead to increased production of prolactin in the body. This affects males and females differently. In females, the signs include: missed periods, unwanted breast milk, or difficulty getting pregnant. For males, the signs include: enlarged breasts, no sperm production, or decrease in sexual ability. Contact your doctor immediately in case you experience any of these symptoms while using this medicine.
In other rare cases, this drug may trigger a serious allergic reaction. Get in touch with your doctor if you notice any of the following symptoms: problem breathing, skin rashes, severe dizziness, or itching/swelling in the throat/tongue/face.
Precautions
This medication is not recommended for patients who suffer from certain medical conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease and severe CNS depression. Patients who have a medical history of hyperthyroidism, low levels of white cells in the blood, bipolar disorder, glaucoma, seizures, or heart problems should not buy Haldol. Before using this drug, ensure that you inform your doctor about your medical history.
Pregnant women should use this medication only if directed by their doctor. Also, if you are pregnant and using this drug, then do not stop the medication until advised by your doctor. This drug is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers.
As drowsiness is listed as one of the side effects of this medication, exercise caution while doing activities that require alertness.
Haldol Dosage
Your doctor will advise the dosage of this drug depending on your condition and case history. Generally, the starting dosage for adults with moderate symptoms is Haldol 0.5mg to 2mg twice to thrice daily and for adults with severe symptoms, the starting dosage is 3mg to 5mg twice to thrice daily.
Interactions
Before using this medication, ensure that you apprise your doctor about all the medications—prescribed, non-prescribed, and herbal—that you are currently taking. This drug may cause serious interactions with the following drugs: Sibutramine, Pergolide, and Cabergoline. Patients who are using these drugs should not buy Haldol unless specifically advised by their doctor.
