General Information on Humira

Humira (generic name adalimumab) is a prescription drug which is used to treat the symptoms of inflammatory conditions that affects the joints, digestive system and spine. These include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, plaque psoriasis, ankylosing spondylitis and Crohn’s disease. Although the drug does not cure these conditions, it significantly helps in alleviating the symptoms and in some cases, it prevents future damage. The drug is available in injection form and is injected under the skin. In order to buy Humira, you must get your doctor’s approval before using it.

Side Effects for Humira

Humira is associated with several side effects. The severity of side effects may vary from patient to patient, depending on their medical condition. In most cases, the side effects are mild and can be easily treated. Only in rare cases, the side effects are severe.

The common side effects of Humira are – sinus pain, mild headache, redness or swelling or itching at the spot where the injection was injected, nausea and stomach pain.

The other lesser known but serious side effects of Humira include – flu symptoms, burning sensation or pain while urinating, constant coughing or coughing blood, hair loss, swelling in ankles or feet, skin rashes, muscle pain, fever, red spots or butterfly shaped skin rashes, seizure and numbness. If you experience any of these side effects, you must immediately seek medical help.

Precautions

Patients using Humira need to take certain precautionary measures to minimize the risk of the side effects. Before using Humira, you must inform your doctor about all your health problems and allergies. You must not use Humira if you are allergic to adalimumab. You must avoid using Humira without consulting your doctor if you have received any ‘Live’ vaccination recently, or if you have hepatitis B, heart disease, skin wounds or open sores. After using the syringe and needles, you must immediately dispose of them.

Humira Dosage

Dosage of Humira is determined by doctors depending on the patient’s medical condition, type of other medicines used, past medical records and response to the initial dosage. For children, the doctor recommends different dosage depending on the child’s height and weight. The standard recommended dosage for adult patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis is 40 mg once a week. The recommended dosage for children (weighing 33 to 66 pounds) suffering from Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis is 20 mg every alternate week and children weighing more than 66 pounds is 40 mg of Humira every alternative week. The recommended Humira dosage for patients suffering from Crohn’s disease is 160 mg in the first week (four doses take over 2 days) and the subsequent dosage is 80 mg taken 2 weeks after the first dosage. If you buy Humira, make sure that you take your prescribed dosage under your doctor’s supervision.

Interactions

Humira tends to interact with certain medicines. It is therefore advisable that you inform your doctor about the other medications you are using before starting Humira. The drug interactions increase the risk of adverse side effects and reduce the effectiveness of the medicines. The drug may potentially interact with Live Vaccinations including Polio, Rotavirus, Chickenpox, Yellow fever and BCG vaccine. Clinical trials suggest that Humira may also interact with Anakinra and Etanercept.
