General Information on Hycamtin
Hycamtin (generic name Topotecan) is a prescription chemotherapy drug that is used for treating different types of cancer. Hycamtin belongs to a group of drugs known as Topisomerase I inhibitors. The drug is available in both capsule and injection form. While the capsule is specifically used to treat lung cancer, the injection is used to treat ovarian cancer, lung cancer and cervical cancer. If you have been suffering from lung cancer or cervical cancer, your doctor may prescribe the drug to you.
Side Effects for Hycamtin
Hycamtin does have the potential to cause side effects. Some patients using Hycamtin may experience side effects while some may cope well with the drug and may not suffer from any side effect at all. The most common side effects of Hycamtin are – mild diarrhea, vomiting, hair loss, nausea, weakness and flu symptoms.
The other serious side effects of Hycamtin include- stomach cramps, pain or burning sensation while urinating, severe itching or burning sensation at the spot where the drug was injected, irregular heartbeats, unusual vaginal or nasal bleeding, appearance of red spots under the skin, breathing difficulty, dry cough, throat ulcer and chest pain. If you experience any of these side effects, you must immediately seek medical assistance.
Precautions
While using Hycamtin, you must avoid close contact with people suffering from infectious diseases and with people who have received live vaccination recently. If you have an appointment for receiving any live vaccination, you must inform your doctor about it. The doctor may advice you to stop using Hycamtin for a brief period or to not receive the live vaccine. When you take your Hycamtin dosage, you must avoid driving or doing other activities that require you to be alert. This is because the drug may impair your vision or thinking capacity.
Hycamtin Dosage
The Hycamtin dosage your doctor prescribes will depend on several factors such as your body weight, the type of cancer you are suffering from, other medications you are using, your past medical records and how well you respond to the medication. Depending on your medical condition, your doctor would determine your Hycamtin dosage either in capsule form or through injection. In most cases, Hycamtin dosage is administered through injection (intravenously). The recommended Hycamtin dosage for treating ovarian cancer or lung cancer is one injection every day for 5 days. You must repeat the dosage after a gap of every 21 days until your doctor recommends you to stop using the drug. The recommended dosage for treating cervical cancer is one injection for 3 days every 21 days. Interactions
Hycamtin when used with other medications may lead to negative drug interactions. The interaction may increase the risk of dangerous side effects. Therefore it is important that you inform your doctor about all the other medications you are using including prescription drugs, over the counter medicines and herbal products or supplements (if any) before starting with Hycamtin treatment. Hycamtin may potentially interact with ‘Live’ vaccination including Chickenpox, Rotavirus, and Smallpox, Polio, BCG and Yellow fever vaccine. In addition, the drug may also interact with Pegfilgrastim, Filgrastim, Ritonavir and Platinum analogues such as Cisplatin and Carboplatin.
