General Information on Hydrea

Hydrea (the chemical name is hydroxyurea) is prescribed to people suffering from sickle cell anemia to reduce the pain associated with this condition and to reduce the need for blood transfusions. This drug is also used for the treatment of various types of cancers, such as myelogenous leukemia, melanoma, squamous cell carcinomas, and chronic myelogenous. In addition to the conditions listed above, this drug may also be prescribed for treatment of thrombocythemia and polycythemia vera.

Side Effects of Hydrea

Possible side effects of this drug include: loss of appetite, diarrhea, nausea, mouth sores, and constipation. You must immediately consult your doctor if the aforementioned symptoms persist or worsen. Some people may experience serious side effects due to the use of this drug.

Careful monitoring by your doctor should minimize the potential risks associated with this drug. You should contact your doctor without delay if you notice any of the following symptoms: bruising/bleeding, signs of an infection (common signs are a persistent sore throat and fever), fatigue, and pale skin. Serious side effects, although not common, include: skin problems (reddened/blackened/darkened skin, skin ulcers, and unusual moles). In rare cases, this drug may cause the following serious side effects: pain in the chest, severe pain in the abdominal area, shortness of breath, seizures, mental/mood changes (symptoms include – hallucination, confusion), dark urine, feeling of numbness in the arms/legs, and yellowing of the eyes/skin.

In other rare cases, this drug may trigger a serious allergic reaction. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction are: skin rashes, itching/swelling, trouble breathing, and severe nausea/dizziness. Consult your doctor immediately if you notice any of the above symptoms.

Precautions

You should not buy Hydrea and use it if you are allergic to it. Before using this medicine, remember to tell your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, especially of: HIV or AIDS, kidney disease, blood/bone marrow disorders, liver disease, high uric acid level in your blood, low levels of platelets in your blood, or if you are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation.

Pregnant women should not use this medication as it may harm the unborn child. Also, Hydrea passes into breast milk, so the drug is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers.

Individuals who use this medication may bleed easily due to injury. This is why you should avoid using sharp objects, as well as contact sports, while you are using this drug.
