General Information on Ilaris
Ilaris is recommended in the treatment of a rare group of hereditary auto-inflammatory conditions that include rashes, pain in the joints and accumulated proteins in tissues and organs. These conditions are referred to as Cryopyrin-Associated Periodic Syndromes (CAPS). The treatment is useful for patients who are older than 4 years. The Ilaris drug is available as a powder but it can be suitably treated to be used as an injection. There are recommended dosages related to the age of the patient with a maximum limit per kilogram of body weight. Each subcutaneous injection of the drug is dispensed once in eight weeks.
Side Effects / Precautions for Ilaris
The common side effects of Ilaris (Canakinumab) are cold, sore throat, sinusitis, stomach upset, headache and dizziness and a dermal reaction at the site of the injection. Vertigo and musculoskeletal pain are reported side effects that reduce with continued treatment of brand or generic Ilaris. Weight gain and influenza symptoms are also seen in some patients. Immediate medical attention is required if there is swelling, severe rashes or breathing difficulty. Severe headaches and dizzy spells may call for the discontinuation of the treatment.
In the absence of adequate research about the effect of Ilaris on pregnant and nursing women, it is advisable to discuss the effects of the medicine on the child. If you have suffered recurrent infections like tuberculosis, hepatitis or skin conditions, it is advisable to avoid brand or generic Ilaris. Canakinumab is not suitable for patients with a compromised immune system or with auto-immune disorders. HIV positive patients and those with active bacterial infections must consider alternatives to this drug.
Ilaris Dosage
For the treatment of CAPS (Cryopyrin associated periodic syndrome) along with FCAS (Familial cold auto-inflammatory syndrome) and MWS (Muckle Wells syndrome), in patients with a body weight greater than 40 kg the recommended dose of Ilaris is 150 mg. It is administered as a subcutaneous injection only. The drug is administered every 8 weeks as a single dosage. For patients with a body weight of 15 kg to 40 kg, the recommended dose of Ilaris is 2 mg/kg. In pediatric patients with body weight of 15 kg to 40 kg the dose may be increased to 3 mg/kg, if they do not show adequate response.
