General Information on Implanon

Implanon (generic name – etonogestrel) is a prescription contraceptive drug used to prevent pregnancy. Implanon is a small plastic rod that is inserted into the skin of the patient’s upper arm. The medicine is slowly released into the body and the rod is left in its place. The drug prevents pregnancy for 3 years. Implanon rod contains etonogestrel, a hormone that inhibits ovulation. The hormone also has the ability to cause changes in the uterine lining and cervical mucus. If you wish to delay pregnancy, you can buy Implanon but make sure you do not use the drug without your doctor’s approval.

Side Effects for Implanon

Implanon, like most drugs, has the potential to cause side effects in the person using it. The side effects can be minor or major depending on the patient’s reaction to the drug. The other lesser known side effects of Implanon are – depression, sleeping problems, swelling in hands, ankles or feet, jaundice, severe pain in pelvic area or pelvic cramps, impaired vision or speech, profuse sweating, severe headache, heavy chest or chest pain, extreme weakness and numbness in one side of the body. If you experience any of these side effects, you must immediately seek medical attention.

Precautions

If you are using Implanon you must take essential precautionary measures to prevent the risk of unwanted side effects. You must not use Implanon if you have recently delivered or if you are breast-feeding. Patients with a history or blood clotting problems, heart attack, breast cancer, liver cancer or other liver disease and unusual vaginal bleeding should not use this dug without consulting their doctor. If you are above 35 years or if you have smoking habit, you should not use this drug unless your doctor specifically recommends it. Before receiving Implanon (insertion), you must notify your doctor if you have heart problems, diabetes, seizure disorder, gallbladder disease or ovarian cyst. If you are scheduled for any surgery you must inform your doctor at least 4 weeks in advance, the doctor may advice you to stop using Implanon for a brief period.

Implanon Dosage

Your doctor will determine your Implanon dosage depending on whether you used any birth control medication before and the type of medication used. There is only one dosage of Implanon so your doctor will only need to determine whether Implanon is right for you or not.

Interactions

Implanon used in combination with other drugs may lead to negative drug interactions. The drug interaction may increase the risk of side effects and reduce the effectiveness of the medicines. Implanon may potentially interact with certain HIV medications including Ritonavir, Indinavir and Tipranavir, seizure medications, antibiotics, Barbiturate, Phenylbutazone and Modafinil. In addition to these drugs, Implanon may also interact with certain herbal products / supplements.
