General Information On Indocin Suppositories

Indocin suppositories are prescribed for the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. In addition to these three medical conditions, this drug is also used to treat soft tissue injuries such as tendonitis and bursitis.

This drug falls under the category of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Though it is unclear exactly how Indomethacin (generic name of this drug) works, it is widely believed that this drug suppresses the production of prostaglandins, a hormone that causes symptoms of inflammation.

Side Effects for Indocin Suppositories

The side effects of this drug may vary from person to person. Common side effects of this drug are: upset stomach, gas, constipation, bloating, diarrhea, mild heartburn, headache, drowsiness, mild dizziness, rashes, or a ringing sensation in the ears. Do not stop your medication if you notice any of the above-mentioned symptoms. With that said, you must contact your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above symptoms worsen.

Immediately stop your medication and consult your doctor if you experience any of the following serious side effects: shortness of breath, severe or persistent nausea/vomiting/headache/tiredness, coughing up blood, dark colored vomit, chest pain, fever, sore throat, sudden weight gain, swelling of the hands/feet, severe abdominal pain, loss of hunger, yellow eyes/skin, dark-colored urine, or black/tarry stools.

A severe allergic reaction to this drug is highly unlikely. Common symptoms of allergic reactions are: difficulty breathing, facial swelling, rashes, and itching. Stop Indocin suppositories treatment and seek emergency medical help if you experience any of the aforementioned side effects.

Precautions

You should not buy Indocin suppositories if you are allergic to it or to any other NSAID drug, such as Ibuprofen. Other conditions in which you shouldn’t use this drug include: (1) if you’ve recently had a heart bypass surgery or are due for one in the near future, (2) you are taking another NSAID, Triamterene, or Diflunisal, (3) you recently had rectal or anal bleeding or have a medical history of inflammation of the anus, and (4) you are in the third trimester of pregnancy.

This drug may not work well for people with certain medical conditions. This is why it is necessary that you tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have any liver or kidney disease, stomach problems (such as ulcers, bleeding, or inflammation), diabetes, asthma, Parkinson’s disease, oral inflammation, and nasal polyps.

You should not consume alcohol during the treatment, as alcohol increases the risk of stomach bleeding. Extra caution should be exercised while giving this drug to the elderly as they are usually more prone to stomach bleeding, kidney problems, and mental changes.

Indocin Suppositories Dosage

Depending on your condition, your doctor will prescribe the right dose for you. It is absolutely necessary that you follow your doctor’s instructions and do not increase or decrease the dosage on your own. If the Indomethacin treatment is for an extended period of time, your doctor may ask you to undergo regular tests to ascertain that this drug is not causing unexpected and serious side effects.

Interactions

This drug may interact with certain medications, including non-prescription drugs (such as mineral or vitamin pills) and herbal drugs. To ensure that the drug is safe for you, you must inform your doctor about all the drugs that you are currently taking.
