General Information On Juvederm
Juvederm is commonly used by plastic surgeons to treat wrinkles on a patient’s face. Its generic name is hyaluronic acid gel, and it belongs to the class of drugs known as dermal fillers. Juverderm is a smooth gel which is injected into the patient’s muscles that need to be treated. It works by softening the fine lines that need to be removed from the patient’s face. Other than this, Juvederm can also be used for filling acne scars, hollow facial spots associated with aging, and lip augmentation. Its effects last for 6 to 9 months, after which the patient needs to repeat the procedure.
Side Effects for Juvederm
Although Juvederm is not expected to cause severe side effects, it is best that you discuss the risks associated with Juvederm with your doctor before starting treatment.
Juvederm contains hyaluronic acid, which may cause discomfort and side effects such as discoloration, swelling, pain and temporary redness at the injection site. Some patients may also experience bruising, itching and tenderness at the site. These side effects can be easily managed and subside automatically within one week of taking the injection. Some serious but rare side effects of the drug may include granulomas, which are bumps or lumps on the patient’s face. If the bumps on your face persist for 1 month, you should contact your doctor for assistance.
You should also not use Juvederm if you are allergic to it or to any of its ingredients. An allergic reaction can be identified by shortness of breath, hives, extreme dizziness, and swelling of the face, throat, tongue or lips.
Precautions
You should not buy Juvederm if you have an allergy to any bacterial proteins. Patients with a history of anaphylaxis may suffer from fatal hypersensitivity due to the drug, and therefore, it is not recommended to such patients. You should avoid being exposed to direct sunlight after at least one week of taking the injection. Also do not use any cosmetic products on your face within one week after the treatment.
If you are pregnant, consult your doctor first before taking Juvederm. It is unclear if the contents of Juvederm enter the breast milk. If you are breastfeeding, tell your doctor about it and take Juvederm only if your doctor approves its use.
Juvederm Dosage
Juvederm is available in three different formulas:
- Juvederm ULTRA 2- Used to treat moderate lines that are very close to the skin and the lines that are around lips and eyes.
- Juvederm ULTRA 3- Used to plump out the lips and smoothen the wrinkles around the lips as well as the lines between nose and the corner of the mouth.
- Juvederm ULTRA 4- Used to improve the face contour and it works on the folds and lines that are most noticible.
The effects of a Juvederm injection last up to 9-12 months. The injection process takes approximately 15 minutes. For most patients, one shot of Juvederm is enough for achieving optimal wrinkle smoothening.
Interactions
Do not take any anti-inflammatory drugs within 3 days of taking Juvederm. You should also avoid taking ibuprofen, aspirin and other blood thinning medicines. These may increase your risks of developing bruising and bleeding at the injection site. Apart from these, you should also inform your doctor about all the prescription and non-prescription drugs you are taking at present. If you are going to give a blood or urine test, you must inform your doctor that you have recently taken Juvederm Injection.
