General Information On Kuvan

Kuvan is the first and the only medicine for the treatment of PKU or Phenylketonuria. A person having PKU won't be able to break down an amino acid found in Phe or Phenylalanine. Thus, the level of Phe rises and may cause behavioral problems and lower intelligence. The Kuvan drug helps in lowering the levels of blood Phe. The Kuvan drug helps in stimulating the PAH enzyme to break down the Phe in the body. Kuvan is a prescription drug which comes in a tablet form. We stock Kuvan 100mg tablets.

Side Effects / Precautions for Kuvan

The common side effects of generic Kuvan are headaches, nausea, diarrhoea, throat pain, vomiting, abdominal pain and upper respiratory tract infection like cold. You should definitely consult your doctor before taking Sapropterin Hydrochloride if you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant or if you are breast feeding your child.

You should also inform your doctor about any past occurrence of fever, liver or kidney problems or anorexia. Let your doctor know if you have poor nutrition or if you are taking medications that inhibit Folate metabolism like Methotrexate. It is highly advisable to tell your doctor about any medication you are already taking, before you start using generic Kuvan. This is because Sapropterin Hydrochloride can interact with other medicines and can cause reactions (including over-the-counter medicines like vitamins, minerals or herbal products as well).

Kuvan Dosage

The dosage of Kuvan is determined on the basis of the patient’s blood phenylalanine (Phe) levels. The starting dose is recommended to be 10 mg/kg/day which is administered daily once. The drug is administered for a maximum period of 1 month. The level of blood Phe is checked regularly after every week for one month. As compared to the baseline readings if the blood Phe does not reduce then the dose may be increased from 10 mg/kg/day to 20 mg/kg/day. The higher dose of the drug is administered for another month and monitored on a weekly basis. When the desired response is achieved then the dose may be changed and may range between 5 mg/kg/day to 20 mg/kg/day. However, if there is no response even after therapy with higher doses for a month, then the treatment must be discontinued.
