General Information On Luvox

Luvox is basically used for treating social phobia or social anxiety disorder or obsessive compulsive disorder involving recurring actions or thoughts. The generic name for the drug is fluvoxamine, which belongs to the category of drugs termed SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. This drug works by affecting brain chemicals that become unbalanced and are responsible for causing obsessive compulsive behavior like excessive hand washing, house cleaning, or counting. In some cases, this medicine can also be used for treating depression or a certain kind of eating disorder called bulimia. You can buy Luvox in the form of oral tablets with 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg strengths.

Side Effects for Luvox

Some of the mild side effects of the drug include weight loss, loss of appetite, dry mouth, diarrhea, upset stomach, nausea, constipation, insomnia, dizziness, impotence, decreased interest in sex, trouble having orgasms, and unusual dreams. Most of these side effects are harmless and subside as your body adjusts to Luvox, but if any of these worsen or persist, it would be better to contact your doctor. You need to seek immediate medical help if you experience seizures, unusual behavior or thoughts, anxiety, memory problems, restlessness, hallucinations, trouble concentrating, high fever, goose bumps or chills, overactive reflexes, lack of coordination, muscle stiffness, confusion, rapid breathing, or sweating. You should also inform your doctor at once if you witness new symptoms like panic attacks, depression, agitation, irritability, hostility, hyperactivity, aggression, or impulsiveness, or you are having thoughts of hurting yourself or committing suicide.

Precautions

Your doctor will need to conduct special tests if you have liver disease, epilepsy, seizures, bipolar disorder, or if you have a history of suicidal thoughts or drug abuse. This medicine can cause fatal or serious lung problems in an unborn baby and therefore, it is not recommended to be taken during pregnancy. This drug can also pass into breast milk and harm a nursing baby, so your doctor will not advise you to buy Luvox if you are a breastfeeding mother. As this drug may make you dizzy, you should not drive a vehicle, operate a machine, or do any such activity that requires complete alertness.

Luvox Dosage

You will initially be recommended to take Luvox 50mg once a day, preferably at bed time. After a few days, your doctor may make adjustments in your dosage, depending on your response to the treatment. The maximum dosage given to a patient over 12 years of age is Luvox 300mg, given as 2 doses of Luvox 150mg each. If you are not able to divide the 2 doses equally, take the larger dose at bedtime. The tablet needs to be taken orally with or without meals.

Interactions

Serious interactions may occur if you take Luvox with thioridazine, sibutramine, ramelteon, pimozide, cisapride or alosetron. You should also not take MAO inhibitors like maclobemide before 2 weeks of starting on Luvox and even during the treatment. You should inform your doctor if you are already taking antipsychotics, water pills, blood thinners, anti-platelet drugs, NSAIDs, benzodiazepines, anti-seizure medicines, beta blockers, and drugs that cause bruising or bleeding.
