General Information On Marplan

Marplan is a non-selective hydrazine MAO-I (that is monoamine oxidase inhibitor), which is an anti-depressant agent. The drug is used in the treatment of depression. It is also effective in patients with suicidal tendencies. It is a choice of drug especially for those patients who have been recently (or newly) diagnoses with depression. The drug is meant for a short-term treatment of depression which may be for a period of 6 weeks. It is effective in those patients who have not responded to other anti-depressant agents. The brand or generic Marplan acts by irreversibly inhibiting the action of MAO in the central nervous system. This inhibition increases the concentration of neurotransmitters called MAO-A and MAO-B. Common side effects of Marplan include sleeplessness, sleep disturbances, sedation, nausea, upset stomach, light headedness (when changing from sitting or lying position to standing position) and abnormal sensations of the skin. Dosages For Marplan

Brand or generic Marplan is administered orally in the form of tablets. The starting dose is recommended to be 10 mg (or 1 tablet) per day. The tablet is administered twice a day. Based on the patient’s tolerability and response the dose may be adjusted. The dosage must be increase as 1 tablet or 10 mg in every 2-4 days period in order to achieve the target dose. This target dose is 40 mg (or 4 tablets) of Marplan per day, which should be achieved by the end of 1st week of the therapy. Then the dosage may be increased by 20 mg/week; the maximum dose is 60 mg/day.
