General Information On Matulane

Matulane is used in combination with other chemotherapy medications for treating Hodgkin’s disease or Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The generic name of the drug is procarbazine, and it belongs to the category of alkylating agents. It prevents the cancer cells from creating new cells and also from growing and spreading. You can buy Matulane in the form of oral 50mg capsules that can also be used for treating other forms of cancer like brain tumors.

Side Effects for Matulane

Nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, constipation, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, dizziness, trouble sleeping, headache, muscle or joint pain, darkening of the skin, and temporary hair loss may occur. However, you need to seek immediate medical help if you experience black or bloody stools, pink or bloody urine, dark colored vomit, yellowing of the eyes or skin, fainting, unsteadiness, stomach pain, severe headache, mouth or lip sores, cold or clammy skin, tingling or numbness in the feet or hands, seizures, stiff or sore neck, vision problems, or chest pain. As Matulane may decrease your immunity, you should keep a watch for symptoms of an infection like difficulty breathing, difficulty urinating, side pain, lower back pain, unusual tiredness, sore throat, fever, and cough or thick mucus or phlegm. Sometimes, Matulane may also give rise to other cancers like secondary leukemia, especially if the patient has already received radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

Precautions

Before taking Matulane, you should inform your doctor if you have diabetes, shingles, recent chickenpox, kidney or liver disease or a blood disease like bone marrow depression, or a low platelet count. Avoid using alcohol or its products like vinegar, sauce, aftershave, and mouthwash, as serious reactions can surface and result in flushing, vomiting, blurred vision, difficulty breathing, seizures, and increased sweating. Avoid smoking as it can increase your risk of developing lung cancer. If you are pregnant, your doctor will not advise you to buy Matulane, as it may cause serious harm to an unborn baby. As the drug causes dizziness, you should not perform any activity that requires complete alertness, such as driving a vehicle or operating a machine. As Matulane increases your sensitivity to sunlight, you should avoid going out in the sun; if you need to do so, you should not forget to wear protective clothes and apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15.

Matulane Dosage

For children, a doctor will recommend Matulane 50mg/m2 of his/her body surface every day for one week. After that, the dose can be increased to Matulane 100mg/m2 of body surface every day. For adults, a doctor will recommend Matulane 2-4mg/kg per day for one week and Matulane 4-6mg/kg thereafter every day.

Interactions

Serious interactions may occur if you take Matulane with antidepressants, appetite suppressants, antihistamines, drugs for ADD, glaucoma, and high blood pressure, MAO inhibitors, stimulants, and narcotic medications. You should also inform your doctor if you are already taking drugs for diabetes, digoxin, beta-blockers, bethanidine, water pills, rauwolfia alkaloids, atenolol, or tryptophan. You should also not take Matulane with medicines that cause dizziness, such as sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, and tranquilizers.
