General Information on Motilium
Motilium is an antidopaminergic medicine used for the treatment of vomiting, nausea and discomfort caused by gastroparesis (a condition caused by the slow functioning of the stomach). It can also be used for the treatment of reflux. It can be used for stimulating lactation (production of milk in the breasts). Motilium comes in the form of tablets. For the treatment of gastrointestinal problems in adults, the recommended dosage is 10mg 3-4 times daily. You should consult your doctor to fix your dosage as some people may require a higher dose of 20mg 3-4 times every day. For nausea and vomiting, you should take 20mg of Motilium 3-4 times daily. This is a prescription medication.
Side Effects / Precautions for Motilium
The side effects of Motilium (Domperidone) are drowsiness, dizziness, headaches, nervousness, irritability, agitation and twitching, difficulty in speech, loss of balance, loss of muscle control, disorientation and fainting. You may also experience itchiness in your eyes or you may develop crusty eyelids due to discharge of eye fluids while taking brand or generic Motilium. You may even develop an itchy rash. There may be some gastrointestinal changes like stomach cramping, heartburn, diarrhoea, constipation or change in your appetite on consumption of brand or generic Motilium.
Since Domperidone can cause increase in the levels of blood prolactin, you may experience breast enlargement, breast tenderness, irregular menstrual periods or production of milk (also known as lactation). You should consult your doctor immediately if you experience abnormal urination, irregular heartbeat, swelling of feet, hands or ankles or any other type of allergic reaction on taking the Motilium drug.
Motilium Dosage
Recommended Motilum dosage for adults is 20 mg a day. The dose depends on the patient’s dopamine sensitivity. The drug is also prescribed for children who are older than 5 and younger than 12. The starting dosage is a total of 30-40 mg per day, which should be taken three to four times in doses of 10 mg. For chronic conditions, the dosage for adults is 10 mg to be taken three to four times a day. For children, the dosage is half a tablet or 5 mg. Motilum should not be prescribed for individuals with severe renal insufficiency. In such individuals, the clearance rate of this drug is reduced severely and can cause fluid retention.
