General Information On Myfortic

Myfortic or Mycophenolate is an oral medication used for suppressing your immune system after a kidney transplant. Your immune system helps you fight diseases and infections, but if you have recently undergone a kidney transplant, it may also reject or fight the new kidney since it may consider the new kidney to be an ‘alien’ organism in your body. In such a situation, your immune system needs to be suppressed so that the transplanted kidney can "settle down" in your system. You may be asked by your doctor to buy Myfortic along with a steroid medication and Cyclosporine like Neoral or Sandimmune.

Side Effects for Myfortic

Myfortic decreases your immunity, and therefore, you may be more vulnerable to developing lymphoma and other kinds of tumors. Contact your doctor immediately if you have signs of infections like sore throat, fever, night sweats, skin growth, enlarged lymph nodes, and weight loss. Constipation, headache, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, gas, stomach upset and trouble sleeping are some of the common side effects of the drug, but you should contact your doctor if any of these symptoms worsen or persist. Myfortic may also increase the risk of brain infections like PML, and you should inform your doctor if you are experiencing difficulty concentrating, moving, or speaking, and experiencing seizures, clumsiness, confusion, and sudden mood changes. Seek medical help immediately if you have black or tarry stools, chest pain, dark colored vomit, and shortness of breath.

Precautions

Myfortic can harm an unborn baby, and that is why pregnant women are not advised to take this drug. You will also need to give a negative pregnancy test 1 week before the treatment process starts. As your immunity is hampered, you are at a higher risk of falling ill if you remain in the company of sick people and/or in unhygienic surroundings. Therefore, try to keep yourself and your surroundings clean and stay away from sick people.

Myfortic Dosage

You can buy Myfortic tablets in 180mg or 360mg strengths. The recommended dosage is 2 tablets of 360mg given twice daily on an empty stomach, one hour before or two hours after food intake. For children, Myfortic 400mg/m² is given twice a day, and patients with BSA of 1.19 to 1.58 m² are given three Myfortic 180mg tablets or two Myfortic 360mg tablets and one 180mg tablet twice a day. Patients with a BSA of more than 1.58 m² are given 4 Myfortic 180mg tablets or 2 Myfortic 360mg tablets twice a day. The tablets should not be crushed, chewed or broken, as the pills are enteric-coated and should be swallowed whole. Enteric-coated pills have special coating that protects your stomach, and breaking it may cause damage to your stomach lining.

Interactions

Drugs that may interact with Myfortic include Questran, Welchol, Colestid, Cytovene, Zovirax and other medicines which may weaken the immune system like Imuran or CellCept. Apart from these, you should also tell your doctor about all the prescription drugs, non-prescription medicines and herbal products you are using at present. Do not start any new medicine before consulting your doctor.
