General Information On Myleran

Myleran is used for the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia. It is an alkylating agent that helps in slowing reproduction and growth of some specific kinds of white blood cells (white blood cells help in fighting leukemia). Myleran should be administered orally. The range for adult dosage is 2mg to 8 mg daily (the general recommended dosage is 2mg daily). The dosage should exceed 4mg strength only for very serious cases as high dosage can lead to development of bone marrow aplasia.

During the initial course of treatment, the count may actually increase and this should not be seen as resistance to the drug. The dose should not be increased during the first ten days. When a decline is noticed, the drug should be stopped before normal levels are reached. The decrease in counts can usually be observed in 12 to 30 weeks after the initiation of Myleran medication. During remission, the patient’s leukocyte count has to be monitored closely.
