General Information On Adalat
Adalat is used for the prevention of angina attacks so that the patient is allowed to exercise more. Its generic name is Nifedipine, and it is a calcium channel blocker. You can buy Adalat in the form of oral capsules. It works by relaxing the blood vessels so that the heart can pump the blood more efficiently and its workload is reduced. This drug can also be used for treating hypertension or high blood pressure. It can only prevent an angina attack, but it cannot treat an already triggered attack.
Side Effects for Adalat
Some of the side effects commonly associated with Adalat include headache, tiredness, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, insomnia, mild itching or rash, joint pain, warmth, tingling or redness under the skin, leg cramps, and increased urination. These are mild side effects and subside as your body adjusts to the drug. However, you should seek medical help if you experience any serious side effects. Such side effects may include vision changes, shortness of breath, worsening angina, a tingly or numb feeling, fainting, jaundice, swelling on the feet or hands, or pain spreading to the shoulder or arm.
You should stop using Adalat if you develop an allergic reaction to it. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include difficulty in breathing, swollen face, tongue, throat or lips, hives and rashes.
Precautions
You should not buy Adalat if you are already suffering from a kidney or liver disease, coronary artery disease, digestive problem, or congestive heart failure. If you are going to have a surgery or dental procedure, inform your surgeon or dentist that you are on Adalat treatment. As this drug makes you dizzy, you should limit your alcohol intake and avoid performing activities that require complete alertness. These may include activities such as driving a vehicle, operating a machine, etc. Pregnant women should use Adalat with caution, as it is not known whether it can cause harm to an unborn baby or not. Adalat can pass into breast milk and may harm the nursing baby. Therefore, this drug should not be used by lactating mothers.
Adalat Dosage
You will be advised to take Adalat 30mg to 60mg once a day, but dosage adjustments can be made as per your medical condition and response to treatment. The maximum dosage should not exceed Adalat 90mg a day. The drug needs to be taken on an empty stomach. This medication must be swallowed whole. It should not be broken, divided, chewed or dissolved. If you need to discontinue the medicine, you should not do so abruptly. The dosage will be decreased gradually, only under your doctor’s supervision.
Interactions
You should not take Adalat if you are taking tacrolimus, quinidine or phenytoin. Medicines such as azole antifungals (e.g. itraconazole), rifamycins (e.g. rifabutin), macrolide antibiotics (e.g. erythromycin), and anti-seizure medicines (e.g. carbamazepine) can affect the working of Nifedipine. Avoid using drugs that may increase your heart rate or worsen your chest pain, such as phenylephrine, psudoephedrine and caffeine. Apart from these, tell your doctor about all the prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, injections and topical applications you are using at present.
