General Information On Novantrone
Novantrone is used for treating leukemia, prostate cancer, and other types of cancers, in addition to multiple sclerosis. The generic name of the drug is mitoxantrone, and it belongs to the class of anthracenediones. It works by stopping or slowing the growth of cancer cells, thus decreasing the amount of cancer cells in the body and treating the condition. You can buy Novantrone in the form of an injection that needs to be administered in the patient’s vein and not the muscle, spinal cord, or under the skin.
Side Effects for Novantrone
Some of the most common side effects that Novantrone patients experience include mild nausea, constipation, or diarrhea, stomach pain, heartburn, hair loss, runny nose, tiredness, depression, blue-green color of urine, bluish color in the whites of eyes, missed menstrual periods, and heavy menstrual bleeding. Most of these side effects are harmless and subside within a few days of getting the shot. However, you need to watch out for mouth sores, chills, painful or burning urination, black, tarry or bloody stools, severe diarrhea or nausea, rapid weight gain, chest tightness or pain, difficulty breathing, coughing up of blood, dark colored vomit, uneven heart rate, or changes in the skin where the injection was given. An allergic reaction to Novantrone can be identified by swelling of the tongue, face, throat or lips, or hives. If you develop any of these symptoms, you should immediately inform your doctor who may decide to discontinue the medicine or adjust its dosage.
Precautions
Before your doctor recommends you to buy Novantrone, you should inform him/her if you have already undergone Novantrone, daunorubicin, or doxorubicin treatment, or if you have a liver or heart disease, weak immunity, congestive heart failure, blood clotting or bleeding disorders, or a blood cell disorder like anemia or low platelet count. If you are pregnant, you should not take mitoxantrone as it can harm your unborn baby. In order to avoid pregnancy during Novantrone treatment, you should use an effective barrier-form of contraception like condoms. Breastfeeding mothers should also not take this drug as it can pass into breast milk and harm a baby.
Novantrone Dosage
You will usually be given Novantrone 12mg/m2 intravenously for 5-15 minutes every 3 months. An echocardiogram will be taken in order to evaluate the LVEF of a patient, which is important if you show signs of congestive heart failure during treatment. Your blood count, including your platelets and liver function, will also be monitored in order to avoid any other complications. Women who are able to conceive will have to give a negative pregnancy test before Novantrone is given to them each time.
Interactions
Some of the medicines that may interact adversely with Novantrone include natalizumab and other cancer medications, especially anthracyclines like doxorubicin. Apart from that, you should also inform your doctor about all the medications you are using at present, including prescription and non-prescription drugs, herbal products, health supplements, topical applications, oral suspensions, and any other anti-cancer therapy drugs.
