General Information On Onglyza

Onglyza is used for controlling high blood sugar levels in patients suffering from type 2 non-insulin dependent diabetes. This drug prevents kidney damage, loss of limbs, nerve problems, blindness and sexual disorders related to diabetes. Generic name of this drug is Saxagliptin and it works by increasing the levels of incretins, a hormone that controls blood sugar levels by increasing the release of insulin after meals. You can buy Onglyza in form of oral tablets.

Side Effects for Onglyza

Stuffy or runny nose, cough, sore throat, headache or stomach pain are some of the most common symptoms reported by Onglyza patients. However, sometimes patients may also develop serious side effects such as swelling on hands, feet or ankles, easy bleeding or bruising, burning sensation or pain while urinating. You should consult your doctor immediately if you notice any of the aforementioned symptoms.

Overdose of this anti-diabetic medicine may cause low blood sugar levels. Its symptoms are: sudden sweating, fast heartbeat, shaking, blurred vision, hunger, headache, tingling on feet or hands, or dizziness. If you notice any of the aforementioned symptoms, immediately take glucose tablets or something sweet. This will increase your blood sugar instantly.

An allergic reaction to this drug may be identified by swelling on face, lips, throat or tongue, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness or hives. If you experience any of these, seek medical help immediately.

Precautions

Before taking Onglyza, tell your doctor if you have a kidney disease or if you are on dialysis. Also, inform your doctor about all the medications that you are currently taking.

If you feel dizzy after taking Onglyza, avoid doing activities that need complete alertness such as driving a vehicle or operating a machine. You should also limit alcohol intake as it may decrease your blood sugar levels. Pregnancy can worsen or even cause diabetes. So, use this medicine during pregnancy only if clearly indicated.

For effective management of diabetes, your doctor is likely to prescribe Onglyza along with other medicines and ask you to follow a diet and exercise regime. You must ensure that you take your medicines and follow your diet and exercise plan as directed by your doctor.

Onglyza Dosage

Depending on your medical condition, renal condition, general health and response to the treatment, you will be recommended Onglyza 2.5mg or Onglyza 5mg once in a day with or without meals. If you are using the medicine with Cytochrome P450 3A4 inhibitors, you will not be advised to take more than 2.5mg of this medicine in a day. The tablet should not be chewed, crushed or dissolved and should be swallowed whole with a glass full of water.

Interactions

Some of the drugs that may affect the working of this medicine include azole antifungals like ketoconazole, HIV protease inhibitors like ritonavir, and macrolide antibiotics like clarithromycin. Some medicines when taken with Onglyza may make blood sugar levels management difficult. Names of a few such medicines are corticosteroids, quinolone antibiotics, and certain psychiatric medicines. In addition to the above, Beta blockers may also cause complications when taken with Saxagliptin. This is why, before you start taking Onglyza, you must tell your doctor all the medicines that you are using.
